Thanks to a French (of course) drug company, there soon may be more than one option when it comes to morning after pills. Like, several mornings after. While Plan B works for three days after unprotected intercourse, the new drug–ella–is effective for five. Those two extra days can really count if you live in a rural area or face other obstacles to getting Plan B within that three-day window. Ella (also called ulipristal acetate), won unanimous backing ... Read More
In addition to BUST's current cover band, there's even Rosanne Cash. To quote Flavorpill, "She & Him. For free. Outdoors at Governors Island. Do you really need us to talk you into this one?" (Leah Taylor) And did we mention FREE? You can even borrow a free bike to tool around from thing to thing (til 4:30pm anyway), or just take your own on the free ferry over.   Trinity Wall Street presents singer/songwriter Rosanne Cash, 2 PM - 4 PM The daughter of ... If you haven't read Hanna Rosin's Atlantic piece, "The End Of Men," here's the short version–modern society has created a world better suited to stereotypically defined female skills. The sad facts she trots out include statistics on dropping levels of male enrollment at colleges and in the post-recession workforce. If you, like me, love men, it is a truly tragic read. That said, besides the title I didn't find it particularly incendiary. The same cannot be ... Read More
A friend recently sent a link to a Foreign Policy magazine article showing a not-so-distant past in Afghanistan. The author, Mohammad Qayoumi, recalls a past quite different to portrayals in today's media, and has the book of photographs to prove it. In the essay accompanying the pictures he writes, "A half-century ago, Afghan women pursued careers in medicine; men and women mingled casually at movie theaters and university campuses in Kabul; factories in ... Reports coming out of the FDA don't look good for Flibanserin, the drug that's supposed to boost women's libidos. Interestingly enough, the problem seems to be that the little blue pill doesn't cause an increase in sexual desire, but in the number of "sexually satisfying events." Firstly, let me be proud to report that I can banish this weirdo euphemism in favor of the word ORGASM. Secondly, what? This is a problem...why? Before you get wound up about side effects, ... In a print edition of the New York Times I oddly came across last weekend, I read an article by Katherine Zoepf about a woman in Saudi Arabia who is leading a campaign called, "My Guardian Knows What's Best for Me." Simply put, all women in Saudi Arabia are accorded legal and human rights by their closest, eldest male relative. This typically goes from father to husband. And eventually to son, but that's getting ahead of the story. The point being, one ... Read More
When your favorite band starts getting successful there are many potential pitfalls, but among the two deadliest are overproduction and happiness. The verdict was still out on The National when I went to last night's show at Radio City Music Hall. Though there's much to love in their latest contribution, High Violet, the album is certainly overproduced for my liking. So when the horns and strings sections took the stage, I worried. Knowing that Matt Berninger has ... Read More
Yesterday I caught Samantha Bee promoting her new book – I Know I Am, But What Are You? – as part of the Bryant Park Reading Series, only there was no reading going on. Apparently her material was deemed unsuitable for loudspeakers in a public venue. From the opening grafs alone (a homicidal fantasy involving her parents and musings on a family history of sluttery), I suspect it may have been the right decision. Amen and Hallelujah! Have you not yet ... Read More
To those who ask, "Can't we all just get along?" We at BUST say, "Where's the fun in that?" Hear our own Emily Rems debate who has got the best late night band on NPR's Soundcheck Smackdown.  Hint: Rems has some different ideas... If that's not enough opinionator for you, have a listen as our Eat Me columnist Chef Rossi describes the perfect summer encounter. (Maybe she's talking about sex, maybe BBQ sauce; have a listen and you decide.) Jimmy Fallon's house ... Read More
Sarah Palin's address last month at an anti-choice breakfast caused a huge ruckus for her liberal use of the word "feminist." (Interesting who didn't seem to notice.)  Folks everywhere questioned this claim, but I think Meghan Daum hit the nail on the head here  in pointing out that Ms. P. is well within her rights. Think what you will of her politics, you gotta hand it to the lady; she's galvanized support from an enormously disenfranchised ... Read More
