Still coping with Liz & Dick PTSD (symptoms include nausea, The Parent Trap nostalgia, and occasionally screaming, “I’m bored!” for no apparent reason)?
Luckily, Lifetime’s found a way to make it up to you. On February 2nd Lifetime will air Betty & Coretta, an original movie about, according to this new promo, freedom, friendship, and a bunch of fantastic pantsuits. The film follows the lives of Coretta Scott King, played by Angela Bassett, and Betty Shabazz, played, divalicious-ly no doubt, by Mary J. Blige.
The real Betty & Coretta
These two women were the wives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, respectively, but they were also activists and personalities in their own right. Betty Shabazz was an active member of the NAACP and the National Urban League, and hosted the National Council of New York Women in New York City in 1984. Coretta Scott King made her own mark by equating the Civil Rights Movement with the struggle to obtain LGBT rights. She also personally pressured Ronald Reagan to help end apartheid, and promoted non-violence worldwide. It would be hard to find two women more deserving of commemoration. Hopefully their Lifetime treatment will be moving, tasteful, and inspirational in all the ways Liz & Dick wasn’t (still rooting for you, Lindsay!).
