Amy Winehouse, Rest In Peace

BY Laurie in Music

We've all lost a great talent today, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home. While it does not come as a surprise to most, it is still shocking that someone so young and so clearly gifted is gone. I didn't know Amy, but did work with her once back in 07 on her press tour for Back in Black during a photoshoot for BUST.  When that record came to our office, it was just so superior to anything we'd heard in years, and it was instantly loved by ... I like to complain that there is simply not enough new RAWK in the world these days, everything’s all wimpy electronic blips and bleeps, or slow, mellow folky beard rock – which is all fine and good, but sometimes you really just need an old fashioned, ass-kicking power pop rock record! So I was happy to hear about Kentucky based Sleeper Agent, who play fast, catchy and hard. Lead singer Alex Kandel’s vocals are reminiscent of Chantal from ... Read More
We’re real proud to announce that we have a big, fat, new book coming out this fall. It’s called The BUST DIY Guide to Life and will be published by STC Craft/A Melanie Falick Book (which is a division of Abrams) and it’s kind of a big deal! The book includes a bunch of past articles on crafts, and fun ideas for things to do, (over 250) and also features some brand spankin’ new material. Organized by category—beauty and health, ... Tig Notaro, No Moleste

BY Laurie in General

Last week I received a new comedy CD of Tig Notaro doing stand up from the fine folks over at Secretly Canadian entitled Good One (out Aug. 2). I wasn't very familiar with her, but I will say after listening, I am an insta-fan! Her delivery is slow, dry and fairly sarcastic, I guess she's pals with Sarah Silverman and has been on a bunch of tv shows, in any case, I'm looking forward to seeing more from Tig! Check out this hilarious clip from Good One, and below ... Read More
We’re very pleased to announce the winners of the Ladies of Polaroid contest, a photo competition sponsored by www.landcameras.com and co–sponsored by BUST. The idea was to submit photos inspired by the vintage manuals from the original Polaroid Land Camera, and the results were all pretty amazing, and so adorable!            There were two categories, “reproduction” and “open” ... Why are Joan Jett and Cherie Currie suing Main Man records over a Runaways tribute album slated for release later this month? According to Main Man's site, portions of the proceeds of Take It or Leave It, which includes 2 cds full of prominent rockers covering Runaways classics, are going to the American Institute for Cancer Research in memory of Sandy West, former Runaways drummer, who lost her fight with cancer in 2006. The suit, allegedly being filed by ... Read More
After my swift departure from Corporate America a few months ago, I found myself at a loss. Not so much a loss for the consistent paycheck I continually wasted on frivolous travel or the much-needed health benefits for “regular checkups”, but the notion I would never find a place or group of people who felt the same way I did about the word fuck. I have been blogging for three years, but only recently started taking it more seriously and actually ... Read More
One my favorite people in the world (and former BUST writer), Sarah Verdone was a talented writer, beautiful wife, and mother to two young daughters. She lost her battle with cancer last year, and we all still miss her terribly. Come help celebrate her memory next Wednesday at a benefit party for a writers award created in her name. We’ll be there! Tucker Viemeister & Paper Magazine invite you for Cocktails to support the Sarah Verdone Writing Award ... Read More

Review: Mike Mills' Beginners

BY Laurie in Arts

Director, writer, and graphic designer Mike Mills (whose first film was 2005’s Thumbsucker) has a new movie out June 3rd called Beginners—a beautiful film about love, death, and new beginnings. Based on Mike’s personal experiences, the story revolves around 38-year-old Oliver (played by Ewan McGregor) whose father Hal (Christopher Plummer) comes out as a homosexual at the age of 75 after his wife of 45 years passes away. Unfortunately Hal is ... Read More
