I recently went to see the documentary Helvetica, yes it's about a font, and no, it's not that boring. Shot beautifully, mostly of signs from around the world, the ubiquitous font shows up in just about every corner of the globe. Here we have a bunch of famous designer dudes talking about the history and thier love (and sometimes hatred) of the omnipresent letters. Just like in the design world, we barely see any women here, except two, the spunky and talented Paula Sher and the super smart author Leslie Savan. Read More

Miranda July watch!

BY Laurie in General

Our favorite director/actress/performer/author Miranda July just announced a NYC reading on Oct. 5th as part of The New Yorker Festival, tickets go on sale Sept, 15th thru ticketmaster. If you've never seen her speak or perform live, you owe it to yourself to check her out, she is one charming and lovely lady! There will also be an amazing interview with her in the new issue of BUST, on newsstands at the end of Sept. In other MJ news, I was happy to see that contrary to accusations by now deceased cuckoo artists, Miranda went on record as saying she is most defintely NOT a Scientologist. Read More

Rasputina

BY Laurie in Music

I've always loved Melora and her cello band Rasputina, but this latest cd Oh Perilous World is probably one of her best. Here she's teamed up with that other 1800's lovin' gal -the one and only Dame Darcy for the video for 1816, The Year Without a Summer. You can also check out the very fine tune Cage in a Cave on our Media Taster to the left. Enjoy the old timey splendour. Read More

Come Into My House

BY Laurie in Music

There has been a whole slew of fun dance/rock/disco bands coming out in the last few years, like Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Justice and Simian Mobile Disco, but my current fave of the bunch is 23 year old Calvin Harris from the UK. His mix of juicy slabs of funk and goofy falsetto lyrics on his new release, I Created Disco, (out here in Sept.) is simply irresistable. And in an absolutele genius marketing/promotional move, he's asked his UK fans to stage simultaneuos house parties on Aug. 18th, the night of his single release. Read More

2 awesome nudes

BY Laurie in General

Ya gotta love NME's cheeky art department, and boy do I ever. After Beth Ditto posed nude for the cover last month, Art Bruts Eddie Argos posed for an inside feature in his birthday suit too. Who's next? Amy Winehouse? Just kidding, that would be scary. In a related note, check out the amazing Brit music magazine Plan B. they've got loads of cool and often girlcentric articles, and were one of the first to put Miss D. on their cover. The new issue sports a Bjork cover feature and a rather in depth look back at Riot grrrl. Read More

Our Name in Lights

BY Laurie in General

Despite the gloomy weather in New York today there’s a rosy glow being cast over the Bust office by this completely awesome sign. The Bust-y pink piece of loveliness was sent to us by the totally charming and talented craftspeople at Brooklyn’s own Lite Brite Neon Studio and it’s the kind of surprise that couldn’t help but brighten up everyone’s day. I loved it from the start but when I found out that Neon signs are one of the most energy efficient light sources available and that it will last for decades, well my heart just about shone as bright as it.
