Kingsley Browne, Master of the Antiquated Sexist Sentiment, Sits Down With Samantha Bee

by Katrina Pallop

Watching The Daily Show has become a nonnegotiable part of my morning ritual. I roll out of bed, get the coffee brewing, appease my cats with some Fancy Feast, and turn to Jon Stewart for my daily reality check. This morning was no exception.

As I was watching, happily chowing down on some oatmeal, my gag reflex was suddenly tripped as a white-haired old gentlemen appeared on the screen beside Samantha Bee. It was Kingsley Browne! The ridiculously-named sexist we blogged about yesterday (you know, after he totally got his ass handed to him by Soledad O’Brien for accidentally endorsing racism).

Not one to rest on his laurels, Browne outdid himself during his spot on The Daily Show. He offered up a slurry of half-baked reasons as to why women shouldn’t be allowed to serve in combat, conveniently ignoring the fact that they have been doing so for an entire decade. And while his every sentiment was dripping with sexism, there was one statement that made me wonder if he’d moved onto straight trolling.

“Girls become women by getting older,” Browne said, “boys become men by accomplishing something, by proving something”.

Whew! Thank God. Now I can stop worrying about accomplishing anything and enjoy my inevitable decay. This will totally free up all those annoying hours of productivity in my day and make much more room for cross-stitching and blowjob-giving—or any other Kingsley Browne-approved activity my heart desires (as long as it doesn’t involve active combat!).

But don’t worry. Samantha Bee’s epic slam at the end of the interview does a whole lot to alleviate the pain of knowing that raging sexists like Browne are still at large. Enjoy!
