I would say that I listen to about 30+ different bands on any given week, and to be quite frank, most of them sort of bleed right into the next. I like to sit at my desk and listen to each new CD that comes into the BUST office with care, in its entirety, and then at the end I will make my evaluation by taping a little note to the cover that says something like, "this sounds like farts," or, "this is decent, but in an annoying way." When pressed to define ... Read More
Have you ever had a dream where Kathleen Hanna asks you to house-sit for her, and the minute you know the coast is clear, you seek out her private diaries and personal letters, make a heap of it all on the floor and jump into it, as you would a pile of leaves? No? Um, me neither. But if you ever wanted to do something similar, you should head to the NYU library and check out the donation of old zines, and other such writings that she's added to ... While doing my daily trolling of the Internet, I came across the coolest thing ever. Artist Katie Paterson took a trip to Iceland and recorded the sounds of glaciers, which she then had pressed into ice records that were made from the drippings of the actual glaciers she recorded. (!!!) It's little nuggets of brilliance like this that make me happy to be alive, and whistle while I work and all that. To join in on the inspiration, go ... Read More
Dragging someone who is vocal about hating comedy to a comedy show, in three degree weather, is potentially more of a laugh riot than said show could ever hope to be; however, when my friend and I braved the icy NYC winds to see Sandra Bernhard perform a sold out show at Joe's Pub last night, she for sure managed to pull off entertaining us even better than we entertain ourselves.  Live comedy can be a painful, awkward, mortifying experience, and yet certain ... I have been going sort of nuts over Hidden, the new These New Puritans album, which is set to be released by Domino on March 2nd. I wasn't familiar with the band until recently, but now I'm hooked and will be forced to sniff out their first release, Beat Pyramid, as well.  The first single off of Hidden is called "We Want War," and happens to be my favorite song off of the album. I usually hate when that happens, but luckily the rest of the CD is just as ... Read More
Even though I was sick as a dog and filled with green boogers from the shoulders up, I ran-skipped all the way to the BUST office when I got word that my Joey Roth Ceramic Speakers had arrived. "I hope you don't have to send these back; the box is huge," my editor informed me. And I'm glad that I don't have to send them back too because at this point, I would put on a onesie and wrestle someone to the ground to be able to keep these things.  Joey Roth lives in ... A few things are a given in terms of my consumer practices: I will go see any movie that Parker Posey is in, even though it may or may not be wretched, and I will read anything put out by VICE Magazine.   VICE Magazine recently released their second volume of "best of " treasures called News, Nudity & Nonsense: The Best of Vice Magazine Volume Two, 2003-2008. The book is a quick read, (it even states inside somewhere that most VICE articles can be ... Read More
Seeing a band or performer who you really like play live for the first time is such a delicate situation. Let's say that you've been listening to a certain album non-stop for months, are madly in love with it, and then you go see the songs performed live and they just majorly stink up the place. It's a sad thing when that happens, but let me just tell you that this did NOT happen when I went to my first ever Jemina Pearl show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on ... Read More
I am considering making it "my thing" in writing up concert reviews to re-tell the occurrences of fights that broke out while I was there. It seems to happen at every show I go to and is distracting in that sort of "this is so awkward, I can't look away" sort of way. Last night I attended the Julian Plenti show at the Bowery Ballroom, which was also apparently attended by the inhabitants of some sort of local mental hospital.     Julian Plenti is ... Read More
Are you finding yourself stumped on what to do and where to go this weekend? Do you live in NYC and like to have fun? Well I'm glad we had this talk because I have a suggestion for you. Head to Joe's Pub this Friday at midnight (CRAZY! I Know!) to check out a one night only performance of Jeffery and Cole Thanksgiving Casserole.  If you are not familiar with Jeffery and Cole, then you are in for a world of Googles this afternoon, my friends. Jeffery and Cole ... Read More
