BUST HQ is one of those places that's crawling with all kinds of new music. As I'm sort of a strange person with pretty particular taste, I don't often listen to a lot of it, but today I was forwarded the music of Arron Dean, and loved it.  Raised on a small farm in an area called Knoppieslaagte outside of Johannesburg, amid the country's political upheaval, Arron followed his muse stateside to play jazz in Boston. Disheartened by the general apathy people ... Read More
"What do women have to do with the origins of the Civil War?," begins Elizabeth R. Varon's piece on the New York Times website. "Growing up in Virginia in the 1970s, I often heard this answer: nothing." It's an answer we all hear as girls in history classes: men went off and made all the wars happen and women sat at home tending the children or planting gardens. I think once I was told about women's involvement as nurses in the Revolutionary War, but that actually ... Read More
I am a Pittsburgh native, which means I am obligated to spend every Sunday of the late summer into early fall watching the Steelers play (and this season, beat) various other teams in the NFL. This season, though, I've been finding it hard to push aside my ideals and totally support my team. As some of you may know, our star quarterback (and former golden boy) Ben Roethlisberger was accused of rape this past spring. Surprisingly, this was not the first time this ... Read More

Mormon Swingers?

BY Katie Oldaker in Sexy

We here at BUST HQ love it when people interact with us on Twitter. (You can, too: we're @bust_magazine!) So when @MormonSwingers tweeted us this week with a link to their blog, we were intrigued.  The Mormon Swingers blog itself is basically just a sex blog but it has pages that discuss, rather in-depth, the balance of swinging while also being devoted to the Church of Latter-Day Saints. I think it's most important in this day and age of black-and-white on ... Read More
Hoping to illuminate the disparity of women to men in the film industry, the Women's Media Center is sending girl journalists to this year's Sundance FIlm Festival in Park City, UT to report, blog, and tweet about the festival's women filmmakers and the state of women in film. This year, Sundance is showcasing 24 feature films and 25 short films by women. While this may seem like a lot, in the top 250 films of 2009, only 16% had females in leadership roles like ... In totally adorable news, the next Muppet movie (set for release in February 2012) will see a totally different side to everyone's favorite muppets—Animal's in an anger-management clinic, Fozzie's started a tribute band—including Miss Piggy, who will, in Muppet world, be the new plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris. I can only hope the film with feature a fashion spread with Miss Piggy as the model—she's looking pretty cozy with Marc Jacobs ... Read More

This weekend marked the first-ever TEDWomen conference, dedicated to exploring how women and girls are reshaping the future. TED is working on putting all the talks on their website, but for now check out this awesome talk from Halla Tomasdottir, an Icelandic businesswoman who got her company Audur Capital through the economic collapse by applying 5 "feminine" values to financial services. {source} <!--copy and paste--><object width="446" ... "The title Public Speaking means that I endorse that I speak publicly," Fran Lebowitz says in the sneak peek of Martin Scorsese's doc about her career, "it's not a general directive… For a general directive, I really advise public listening." I think Fran's on to something. Check out the trailer and her interview with Joy Behar after the jump, and be sure to check out the premiere of Public Speaking, tonight on HBO at 10 PM EST. {source} <object ... Read More
If there's one thing I'm known for around BUST HQ, it's my devotion to the one and only Boss--Bruce Springsteen.  So my delight was palpable when, during his appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this Tuesday, he and (Jimmy's impression of) Neil Young covered Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair." My favorite thing about this clip is that Bruce Springsteen is playing Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy (and whip your hair!)   You need to a flashplayer enabled browser ... Read More
