Texas isn't exactly #1 when it comes to progressive policy-making. Recent legislation has disenfranchised lady-voters and made it nearly impossible to access a safe and legal abortion. Finally, the twinkle of hope we've been waiting for has emerged! Harris County, the jail serving the Houston area of Texas, has adopted comprehensive policy that states "discrimination or harassment of any kind based on sexual orientation or gender identity is strictly prohibited. On the list of badass villainesses, Maleficent from Disney's animated Sleeping Beauty ranks pretty high. Needless to say, I couldn't be more stoked she's getting a "her side of the story" treatment in a live-action film scheduled for release next year. Based on Disney's description of the film, it already sounds way cooler than you were just thinking: "A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. In stuff you never thought about but is actually really cool news, a recent color restoration of an Addams Family on-set photo reveals not one inch of the doom and/or gloom you would expect.  Instead, the color scheme is bubblegum and bottle green! Since the show was filmed in black and white, it doesn't seem like there was a need to decorate with a specific color palette in mind. The look of the actual set in color is a little bit "Crazy Aunt Sally," and I'm really diggin' it. Imagining Morticia coming down the staircase with a big pink backdrop is still, somehow, just as spooky. Read More
While I may not agree with Miley Cyrus's every move (that was not a twerking pun, for the record), she's finally spouting some truth I can get behind: feminism. In an interview with BBC's radio program Newsbeat, Miley declared: "I feel like I'm one of the biggest feminists in the world because I tell women to not be scared of anything. I'm for anybody and everything. I don't care what you want to do in your life, or who you want to be with, who you want to love or what you look like." Err...okay, perhaps her logic is a little flawed. Read More
The current issue of New York Magazine features a stark white cover with the simple words "My Abortion" emblazoned across its center. This spark for discussion comes at a time when new abortion legislation is being passed constantly--leaving women with fewer and fewer options for safely and successfully ending an unwanted pregnancy. In an attempt to expose the human side of such a clinical issue, New York Magazine brings you 26 stories of abortion.  In these tales, you will learn about a girl who was offered a bulletproof vest for the walk from her car to the clinic. Though former fashion-week front row-er Tavi Gevinson doesn't focus much on fashion these days, she's certainly looking most rad in Cole Haan's holiday ad campaign.  The campaign, whose theme is "Talented & Gifted," also features Broadway actors, entrepreneurs, and a 7th grade heavy-metal band (They're called "Unlock the Truth"--I am totally listening to them right now).   Tavi also has a hand-picked gift selection, which you can view here. You know, just in case you plan on getting all of the loved ones in your life a $268.00 pair of shoes. Read More
Unlike the rest of his peers, high school senior Jeydon Loredo will not be appearing in the La Feria School District yearbook. Why? Because Jeydon, who identifies as male, is wearing a tuxedo in his picture.  The tuxedo is standard wear for every other boy being photographed, but according to the school district, Jeydon's photo in particular does not meet "community standards." Wait... Read More

Friday, a super-typhoon struck the Philippines, leaving vast damage and a potential five-figure death toll. The country is doing its best to sort through the wreckage, but with emergency funds already depleted from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake four weeks ago and debris-covered highways making certain areas unreachable to aid, the situation remains incredibly grim. Power, water, and food are all scarce, creative an environment volatile to looting and violence. The New York Times coverage of the disaster reveals an almost inhuman level of destruction. Read More
