Seeing as how the women in our military risk their lives every single day while on duty, it would only seem logical that they should have the best health care possible. Unfortunately, this is definitely not the case. Servicewomen and dependents are currently banned from using their insurance coverage for abortion if they are a victim of rape or incest. It’s deplorable, and a new group, Stand with Servicewomen, has come together to fight the ban. New ... Read More
Two members of Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist punk band that has taken over the news lately, have fled Russia. There are 12 remaining members of the band still in Russia, not including the three who were recently sentenced to prison terms. The two that have fled are reportedly trying to avoid persecution by Russian police, as five members of the band were part of the infamous protest against Putin in February, but only three were arrested. The band stated on its ... Read More
We love the Feminist Ryan Gosling blog so very much, but now there’s a new feminist meme in town-- one that centers around President Obama.    In light of the many recent Republican attacks on women, we're particularly loving Obama's comments in favor of women's reproductive rights. Nerve.com has turned some of the best quotes into fantastic "Hey Girl" images (essentially, actual Obama quotes preceded by, "Hey girl").   He’s also pointed ... Read More
Have you been jonesing for more time with the complicated and fascinating Lisbeth Salander? Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot has been in the news nearly daily lately, and with good reason. The announcement of the members' two-year prison sentences has mobilized and outraged so many of us, and sparked an outpouring of support from around the globe. Three masked activists in Germany were recently arrested for staging a "Free Pussy Riot" protest inside a cathedral, and Madonna and Kathleen Hanna even lent them support. Now a new project, Lets Start a ... Read More
There’s been a lot of talk about rape and resulting pregnancies recently, thanks to Todd Akin’s awful and dangerously inaccurate remarks.  Shauna Prewitt, the Chicago lawyer who had her story of rape and subsequent pregnancy published by CNN, discovered some pretty terrifying news while researching.  According to RH Reality Check, 32,000 women become pregnant from rape each year.  32,000 women whose bodies were unable to “shut that ... Put an Oscar-nominated actress on it! Super-talented style icon, actress, and former BUST cover girl Chloë Sevigny is set to guest star on Portlandia's upcoming season. She’ll be playing Fred and Carrie’s roommate, and though we don’t know any further details about the role, it'll no doubt be hilarious. Maybe as a high-fashion hippie with a penchant for composting and a love of rigid recycling policies? Sevigny has appeared in too many ... Read More
The Democratic National Convention Committee just announced a lineup of 10 women who'll be speaking at the event, which runs from September 3-6.  The list includes Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke, who we all know as the woman who spoke to House Democrats in support of insurance coverage for contraceptives (we unfortunately also know her because of the Rush Limbaugh controversy) Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria (who is serving as an Obama ... House of Deréon, the fashion label created by Beyoncé’s mom, Tina, has unveiled its ads for the Autumn/Winter 2012 line. This season's looks were inspired by Beyoncé’s stage outfits from last year's Glastonbury festival--appropriately, the girl that the line represents is meant to be a free spirit having an awesome time at a music festival. Beyoncé pretty much looks amazing in everything, so we're not surprised that she ... Read More
The Augusta National Golf Club, aka the Masters Tournament course, has decided to allow women (albeit only two) into their prestigious club in Georgia. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and financier Darla Moore are the two first female members.   Some are praising the club for this move, and noting that it represents a milestone for women in business. However, I can’t understand why any woman would even want to be part of a club that has only ... Read More
