Helen Mirren has come a long way since her first acting role as the Virgin Mary in a convent school play, posing sans sackcloth in New York Magazine, to promote the upcoming Love Ranch. She's been a household name (in really smart houses) since the award winning Masterpiece Theater TV series, Prime Suspect. Netflix it if you haven't seen it. Netflix it even if you have. Although the convent school nuns probably won't agree, Love Ranch may become my favorite Helen Mirren performance, ever. And that's saying something. Read More
iTunes offers a free single of the week, but Billy Thin's songshooter.com has a new free song every day you can download legally.  Or submit your own content for consideration. I aspire to remembering to log on daily, because you never know what you're going to find. Today's prize was Boyd County Bop by the not-exactly-hard-on-the-eyes rockabilly guitar guy Danny B. Harvey. I've already listened to it half a dozen times in succession. Cause, yeah, it's that kind of site with those kind of indie musicians. Read More
New Jersey is a never ending stream of whadafug? Real Housewives, Jersey Shore, Jerseylicious, Jersey Couture (seriously??) and  The Sopranos. Even Charles in Charge was from New Jersey. Apparently the drones at the New Jersey Department of Mota-Veacles are so busy catching the hijinks of their TV neighbors they're slacking on the job. NJDMV approved Kim Romano's BIOCH vanity license plate --four years later someone realized that when you group letters together, they make, um...words. Read More
The name Lego came from two Danish words meaning "Play Well". Founded in 1932, who would have imagined the staying power of that first Automatic Building Brick? But these bricks are made for building and that's just what they'll do. Sixty years later, building on its successes, the company lent the Lego name to the first feature length direct-to-discount-video-bin Lego film - The Adventures of Clutch Powers - released this past February. Unless you've got a kid under six, skip it. On the other hand, Lego Art abounds as does Lego Cinema.  YouTube lists 107,000 Lego videos. Read More
The Naked Truth, a photographic & video survey of 50 years of Voyeurism, Nudity and Sex, curated by Ruben Natal-San Miguel opened today at the housprojects gallery on Howard Street, Soho, NYC.  There are the classic couplings of Bert Stern & Marilyn Monroe, David La Chapelle & Amanda Lepore and Herb Ritts & Madonna. But some of the most powerful images are from artists I was less familiar with, like Marla Rutherford's Spring Cleaning above. And that's the whole point to going to see art-- to be moved, to be affected, disturbed. To find something new. Read More

Repent, sinner

It’s okay for women to have sex as long as they don’t enjoy it or actually desire it. That’s so fifty years ago, right? Wrong. Claudia Bellocq, in her blog, Claudia Bites! writes about being called a slut. Awful from a man, but worse still from woman to woman. Teenage girls do it all the time. When our hormones are raging, when we’re just becoming a sexual being, it's the thing we fling at another girl to hurt her, take her down a notch, ruin her reputation. Read More
Kevin Rios, age 23, was convicted of raping two women. Kudos to Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber for doing the right thing and realizing the laws about rape apply to everyone -- no matter how you make your living.  Kevin Rios raped two women. That’s the fact. According to the NY Daily News, however, Rios was convicted of raping a babysitter and a hooker, iconic figures rather than flesh and blood women. Read More
