Review: Bridesmaids

BY Jenni in Artsy

The word being tossed around in relation to Kristen Wiig's star-making new comedy Bridesmaids is womance, and the portmanteau is somewhat apt but not entirely fair. Writers love a good pun or, better yet, a tidy way to label something, especially if it's a new sort of thing that we don't know quite how to handle, which, in a way, Bridesmaids is. Bridesmaids is not quite a chick flick, although it was written by Wiig and Annie Mumolo and boasts a ... Read More

Review: Antichrist

BY Jenni in General

Lars von Trier, the director who so famously tormented Bjork in Dancer in the Dark that she swore she'd quit acting forever, was booed and jeered at at Cannes for Antichrist. People even laughed at the private screening I attended with some of my fellow BUSTies. Antichrist has been censured as misogynist, and, to a lesser extent, as if somehow this is a lesser crime, pretentiously laughable. And while, yes, I did laugh at some over von Trier's over-the-top scenes ... Read More
So at long last, Where the Wild Things Are is opening today, after months of teasing trailers that have brought grown men to tears, online clips of Spike Jonze adorably romping with children behind the scenes, and clothing lines at Urban Outfitters and Opening Ceremony. Warner Bros. took a big chance on an indie director known for his music videos and his feature films Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. It was a big gamble on to trust Jonze and co-writer Dave ... The great movie site Hammer to Nail has posted a call-to-arms for cinephiles in NYC to save local video rental store Cinema Nolita by supporting the creative and awesome endeavors of its Video Store Girl Eleonore Hendricks. Eleonore says, 'Really, our first idea was to just make sure that we didn't have to sell the collection off individually, to make back the money we had lost by not being able to pay the rent... The goal is to make the 8,000 dollars so we can ... Read More
I feel somewhat confident in saying that most of you reading this know someone -- or are someone -- who has watched Donnie Darko over and over again. Maybe as your go-to late night stoner flick, or as your midnight movie date, or as something you watched over and over again trying to tease out the answers from Richard Kelly's story. Donnie Darko was that movie you or I finally stumbled upon on DVD or at the one arty film theater in town that would play a film ... Read More

The video above is a PSA created by Audacia Ray and the participants of the first Speak Up media training workshop for current and former sex workers as part of New York's Sex Work Awareness, a media and public education advocacy organization. This is what Audacia has to say about Speak Up. 'Though talking to the the media is definitely not for everyone and should be approached with caution by people who work in the sex industry, I think it's important to ... Read More
I previously wrote about Sundance sensation Precious a few months ago, and now it's been announced that it's going to play at zee most fantastique festival ever, Cannes. In fact, it's not just playing at Cannes — after all, even Jerry Seinfeld in a bee suit can get press on La Croisette — but it's the only movie from the U.S. competing for the prestigious "Un Certain Regard" award. Check out the official line-up at Variety, or read more at the ... Read More

And it would also make him about $600,000 richer, according to what his attorneys told the judge presiding over Vick's bankruptcy hearing. THR ... Read More
Some of the peeps I heart most use Twitter to interact with their devoted audiences. One such Twitterer who has my heart a-tweepin' is Neil Gaiman, BUST's most recent Boy Du Jour. One of his fans created the most excellent image you see here, in the spirit of the equally adorbs Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling. I can't find who did it since I found it on Neil's Twitter a week or two ago, and that Neil sure does love to Tweet. (Sandman bless him!) If it's yours, speak up ... Read More
