For of you who don’t know, today is Pi Day – the holiday celebrating the mathematical constant π (fun fact: it’s also the birthday of Albert Einstein!). Pi Day is celebrated a number of ways across the United States: discussions on the relevance of π, festivities honoring Einstein, and my personal favorite, excessive consumption of pie. Read More
I could go on for hours about the annoyances of having long hair: having to specially schedule time to wash my hair every week, making sure to tie it up every night to prevent knots, dealing with the jungle of knots that develop in spite of my tying it back the night before…I’ll spare you all the rest of my grievances. Now, I’m no Trekker – I was raised on Star Wars – but I do love me some George Takei. Whether he’s sassily taking on basketball player Tim Hardaway’s homophobic comments or brokering Star Peace and ridiculing Twilight, he’s proven himself over and over again to be a (fabulous) man among men. And he has done it yet again, posting a video of his “happy dance” in celebration of over $158,000 raised for Allegiance, his star-studded, Broadway-bound musical about the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. It’s no secret that women are generally underrepresented in mainstream literature. But now, thanks to the fantastic site History of Nordic Women’s Literature, 1000 years worth of – you guessed it – Nordic women’s literary history is available at the touch of a button. The site, which was a joint project between the Danish Center for Information on Gender, Equality, and Ethnicity and the Swedish National Resource Library for Gender Studies, has compiled in-depth information about over 800 women writers. Full disclosure, BUSTies: I’m a regular Liz Lemon when it comes to chocolate. Which means I LOVE it. So I was super excited when BUST Crafty Lady Callie offered me a bar of Lake Champlain’s Grace Under Fire chocolate to taste and review. I was initially a little skeptical–I’d like to think that I’m fairly adventurous when trying new foods, but the description “Pistachio & Red Pepper Dark Chocolate” did throw me off a bit. Read More

Here at BUST, we’ve been following the story of Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke and the fight for affordable contraception pretty well. We’ve also followed the aftermath, which notably involved radio host and creep extraordinaire Rush Limbaugh verbally abusing Fluke, calling her a “prostitute,” and demonstrating his general lack of understanding of the way birth control and contraception work (explained brilliantly by the fabulous Rachel Maddow). Finally, FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, has lifted its infamous ban on headscarves. The ban, created due to “safety concerns,” was instituted in 2007. FIFA has now proposed a  headscarf that is fastened with Velcro instead of pins, and is permitting female soccer players to test them out over a trial period of four months. Read More
I think I can say with almost 100% certainty that most of us have seen and loved the many incarnations of the “Hey Girl” Ryan Gosling meme. From the original Feminist Ryan Gosling to Sex Radical Ryan Gosling, us Internet-dwellers have looked to Ryan's face for deep and meaningful social commentary (and eye candy, of course). But now the “Hey Girl” meme has evolved away from Ryan's chiseled cheekbones to other familiar faces. As a lady who is very interested in politics, I was ecstatic to discover Hey Girl, It's Rachel Maddow. Read More
