I am a worshipper of vegan mac 'n' cheese. Actually, for a person who eats meat, I find myself thinking about yummy vegan/vegetarian fare all the time. Just last night, I was explaining to my friend Chris all the wonders of vegetarian chorizo. And is there anything quite like a seitan Jamaican patty? The golden crust hiding that steaming curry-spiced treasure! Real talk: I love food!  And it’s about that time of year when all my vegan/vegetarian food dreams come true. The NYC Vegetarian Food Festival is this weekend! When: Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p. Read More
I am one of those chicks that doubles over in pain the first day of my period. When I first started menstruating, the pain would land me in bed for almost two days, and when I could get up to do anything, my whole entire body would feel sore and depleted of energy. Midol and Tylenol could not completely numb the pain, but I still used to hope to Glitter that I had a pill in my bag as I neared the end of the 6-8 hour cycle. I would pop so much Tylenol that my mother would joke about putting me in rehab. Read More
You’ve undoubtedly heard that women are born with all the eggs they’ll ever produce—once they’re gone, you’re SOL if you want to have kids. (Unlike men, who can theoretically reproduce until, and possibly after, their last breath.) Well, you and I were misinformed. Back in 2004, scientists found egg-producing stem cells in the ovaries of adult mice. But new research from Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital has shown that human ladies are capable of generating similar stem cells. Read More
I f*cking love Vivienne Westwood. The brilliant designer baits the press with gems like, "People have never looked so ugly as they do today regarding their dress." In addition to being the mother of punk, she's an outspoken activist to end global warming and consumption. So I was all types of glitter happy to see that Ecouterre, the eco-fashion website, compiled images of her  with some of her delightfully brilliant musings such as:  I never look at fashion magazines. I find them incredibly boring. To me, reading a fashion magazine is the last thing I need to do. Read More
Today Sandra Fluke, the woman deemed unqualified to appear in last week's hearings, testified in support of Women's reproductive rights in a hearing organized by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. I am literally INside of LOVE with Pelosi right now!   You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this video This is only a snippet, but Fluke made it clear that access to birth control goes beyond a conservative agenda to legislate women's sex lives.   V-Day 2013 is a year away. That's enough time for you, me, Eve Ensler, and a billion of our friends to rise together to end violence against women. Personally, I've loved Ensler's work for the past 4 years, ever since I was a Florida State Women’s Center volunteer that worked the door at a showing of the Vagina Monologues. I cringe now when I remember texting my friend, “Why do 'radical feminists' use the word vagina all the time? So uncomfortable.” That night I learned how powerful it is to take control over your body and your sexual future. Read More
Fox News contributor Liz Trotta recently spewed a very hateful and contemptible rant against women in the military that will leave you angered and confused. When asked to comment on changes in the Pentagon's policies towards women that may put them in jobs closer to the front line of warfare, Trotta thought it was a great opportunity to re-victimize victims of military rape, hint that sexual abuse is expected in the military, and blame "the feminists" for federal overspending: ...And the feminists have also directed them, really, to spend a lot of money. This recipe, from the gorgeous new book, Rose Petal Jam: Recipes From a Summer In Poland, looks unbelievably tasty, and is perfect for a Valenti-YUM!-'s Day treat. Not only are these rose-petal-jam-filled donuts beautiful---the deep red from the jam radiates love--but they are also author Beata Zatorska's favorite treats from her childhood in Poland. The recipes for both the simple jam and sweet doughnuts were passed down to her from her grandmother. And you know, when it comes to love and food--- grandma knows best. Read More
Tell me you caught Nicki Minaj's performance at the Grammys. Tell me that I am not alone in labeling it a hot mess.  I love Nicki Minaj. As a feminist of color, I acknowledge all the problems that hip hop has with representing women, especially women of color (don't get me started on the "Stupid Hoe" music video). To be fair,  these problems exist in all artistic industries, from film (the recent Pariah vs. Read More
