Monday, news of Marissa Mayer being named Yahoo’s newest CEO broke. Mayer had worked at Google for thirteen years, and will now be at the helm of a major tech company-one of the biggest male dominated sectors. Woo hoo! According to an Associated Press story, the organization Catalyst (which tracks women’s workplace advancement), says that only 4% of the top Fortune 500 companies are women. Even better. But 37-year-old Mayer’s got even more on her plate. Read More
When did the question of “Can women have it all?” become such a big debate? Although we’ve probably been trying to answer that question since that first multi-cellular organism managed its way out of the primordial soup, lately, it’s been a huge topic of discussion. From Anne-Marie Slaughter’s highly talked-about The Atlantic piece “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All” to Taylor Cotters very criticized Huffington Post blog “A Struggle of Not Struggling,” culture is very seriously trying to figure this one out. We have a lesbian superhero, so why not a Lesbian Super PAC (or Political Action Committee)? Just in case you're not up on your politics: a PAC is a group that dedicates itself to campaigning for social and political change. And yesterday, some very well-known lesbian activists debuted LPAC, dedicated to protecting their rights and those of their families. Read More
Do you remember the little girl group Prussian Blue? BUST covered them for our June/July 2005 issue, when they were all blonde hair, adorable smiles, and white supremacy. The band, which started way back in 2003, fell under the genre of “white nationalist pop." Its front women, Lynx and Lamb Gaede, referred to the Holocaust as a “myth” during an interview with Vice magazine 7 years ago. They also had some questionable fashion sense, as evidenced by these tacky Hitler T-shirts. Read More
Scarlett Johansson has officially entered the Hollywood big leagues. Although she’s won BAFTAs and been nominated for a number of Golden Globes in the past, it looks like 2012 is really Scarlett’s year. 50 Shades of Grey. It’s everywhere, including (probably) on your mom's bedside table. And while everyone is talking about the series and hungrily flipping through its pages, they’re usually trying to figure one thing out: what does hunky perv Christian Grey look like? Well, apparently UK scientists have a lot of time on their hands and love BDSM, because they’re plagued by the same question. And one scientist has come up with the answer.  Yep, that’s the face of Mr. Grey, according to Dr. Faye Skelton of University of Central Lancashire. Dr. Read More
Aaron Sorkin’s newest drama is a lightning rod for criticism, much like every other HBO show as of late. Girls was problematic to some for its depiction of privileged, young white people and lack of diversity. Luck was prematurely canceled after three horse’s deaths occurred during filming. While Girls was condemned for its representation of men (Jessa’s jerk husband Thomas-John, pushover Charlie, oddball Adam) Newsroom is now under fire for its portrayal of women. Read More
Talk about creepy: one California councilman has been charged with sexual assault of not one, but seven women working with him. According to prosecutors, while managing the Orange County Public Works, Carlos Bustamante asked female employees into his office under the guise of talking about business. Once inside, he would kiss, grab, and masturbate in front of them. There are at least 12 other cases in which Bustamante can’t be charged due to limitations, but those cases will be used as evidence. I remember getting American Girl catalogs every few weeks in the mail when I was a little girl. I would beg my parents for a doll, and one Christmas I found Samantha waiting underneath my tree. Despite my love for turn-of-the-century girl Samantha, I always wanted one of the My American Girl dolls--the customizable ones with contemporary clothes and range of skin and hair colors. But I never saw one that looked just like me, with medium-tone skin, brown hair, and curls. Now that I’m almost 20 years old, they finally have the perfect doll for sale (you're many years too late, AG!). Read More
