Ever wondered what it’s like to work in publishing? Come intern for BUST and experience the publishing world first hand. As an editorial intern at BUST, you’ll gain valuable knowledge and insight that’ll help you along the road to a career in journalism. We ask that interns commit to at least 3 weekdays for 3 months or 2 weekdays for 4 months (the hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). We ask that interns come into our Brooklyn office for the duration of their internship so that they’ll have a chance to see the entire cycle of the making of an issue, from start to finish. The internship is unpaid, however, we can offer college credit (depending on your school’s program). There are also opportunities to attend shows and movie screenings for free, as well as the chance to be in an open office environment with the amazing BUST staff, and experience the behind-the-scenes world of a women’s magazine.

Here are just some of the tasks you’ll be working on as an editorial intern at BUST Magazine:

  • The editorial internship is very writing intensive. Interns will be asked to write and pitch both long- and short-form pieces for BUST.com, and will be assigned stories. You’ll also learn how to source a good story lead, how to think outside the box when creating content, how to write a good headline, how to source compelling images, how to work with an editor, and how to keep your personal writing style while still maintaining the tone and message of BUST.
  • You’ll be asked to proofread and fact check stories for the print magazine, and you’ll learn plenty about self-guided research. You’ll be a master at this by the time you leave us (which makes us sad just thinking about it).
  • You’ll transcribe interviews, and in the process, learn more about the work of an interviewer and how they create and frame questions. There may also be some opportunities to do interviews for the blog, so you’ll have the opportunity to learn how to research a subject and conduct an interview.
  • You may be asked to assist at photo shoots, and see how they’re scheduled and executed.
  • You'll have the chance to work with and learn more about promotion via social channels (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc)
