Old's Cool!

BY Laurie in Style

Ladies of a certain age seem to be having their moment in the media right now. Last night, I watched a few episodes of Sunset Daze, the new reality show on WE about feisty folks living in a retirement home in Arizona, whose ages range from their 60s to their 70s. The nouveau riche Real Housewives, who are in their 40s and 50s, are acting up every week on Bravo, and soon we'll have another Sex and the City movie featuring glam gals in their 40s and 50s.     I have a bit of a thing for the delectable Mr Wingate's screen-printed designs, so I'm super-psyched about this EXCLUSIVE print he has created for the Craftacular at the Camden Crawl.  From his studio-cum-shop on Columbia Road, in London’s East End, Mr Wingate (aka Sam) creates designs inspired by London's landscape (think tower blocks and pubs) and prints them on T-shirts, cushions and, my favourites, aprons. I also love his owl-neck sweatshirt.  Check out his designs at www.wingateprint.com. Read More

I don’t really know much about fashion. Nor do I read Vogue, but when my school (Pratt Institute) announced that Anna Wintour would be the speaker for this year’s Presidential Lecture, I knew I had to go, if only to say I’d gotten to see her speak. Last year, I got to see the absolutely wonderful Martha Stewart give a lecture as part of the same series (which, when I relayed the details of said lecture to my father, he decided that I, much to his disbelief, went to “a real school.” Thanks Dad. Although one of the more memorable moments in a teenager's life, the prom can be a stressful occasion, especially for girls who can't afford to dress the part of the formal affair.  Luckily there's organizations like Operation Fairy Dust, a New York City charity organization that accept gently worn dresses and then donates them to young women who want to look their best on that special night. They've already donated over 20,000 dresses and are always in need of more. Read More
Indie fashion label Evil Kitty will be showing off their Spring 2010 collection at the Chicago Fashion Incubator Pop Up Shop at The 900 Shops this Saturday, April 10th.  The brand, described by Social Stylists as "sometimes classic, sometimes playful, and always a little mischevious," will be offing free mini-makeovers at the event and free goodie bags (which include a copy of BUST!) to the first 30 guests to RSVP.  There will also be free copies of BUST along with complementary "sips and nibbles." Haven't gotten your April/May issue of BUST yet? Subscribe here. Read More
New York's Full Figured Fashion Week is back and this year's event promises to be even better than the last.  After last year's endeavor attracted thousands of designers, models, retailers and shoppers, this year, founder Gwen DeVoe is upping the ante by aspiring to "make a serious impression on a thin focused industry." With four days of panels and events, including a guided tour of New York's best plus sized hot spots and a workshop for aspiring plus size-models, the event will close with "a full scale fashion showcase hosted by the original plus-size supermodel, Emme. This month's issue of French Elle features plus size beauty Tara Lynn on its cover and in a roughly twenty page spread. While it's refreshing to see a non-impossibly thin model on the cover of a high fashion glossy, I agree with the folks over at The Cut and long for a day in which models of all sizes, from skinny to plus sized and everything in between, can be featured in the same magazine and plus sized models won't only appear as special features. Street Boners!

BY Kelly McClure in Style

Did you ever do that thing where you sat down with your yearbook and went through each page, marking down notes on pictures of your classmates that said stuff like, "always smells like bologna," "has a juicy booty," or, "ate gum from under a desk once?"  Did you ever do this? Hopefully if the answer is yes, you did this during a high school/college age, and not last week, because that's some America's Most Wanted crap right there. Read More
