Russia's Orthodox Church recently advocated more modest dress; top church official Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, who previously said that mini skirts "provoke" men, complained of women "either scantily clad or painted like a clown"- strong words, the article points out, in a country like Russia, where dressing up, wearing a lot of makeup, and good grooming are often the norm for women.
Though this conversation isn't new, it does bring up issues about navigating the world of clothing and fashion through a gendered lens. Read More
The depth of my love for the brilliantly outrageous Lady Gaga is unlimited, immeasurable, and difficult to articulate. I love how she seeks to express herself, combining her musical talents with fashion, theater, and Dadaism to create something interesting and new. Her songs are actually very well written, with their use of clever wordplay (because who doesn’t remember “bluffin’ with my muffin?”), combining glamour and decadence, and yet still be truthful, poignant, honest, and human with ballads such as Speechless and Wonderful. Santi White, better known by her stage name Santigold, is definitely celebrated for her unique melodies, reminiscent of Pixies and inspired by 1980’s pop and Siouxsie and the Banshees, and yet completely her own. Having gained acclaim for her fearless self-expression, it is no surprise that her personal aesthetic reflects her eclectic artistry.
Shipping to stores starting February are some very lovely looking Vans, the product of a collaboration between Santigold and the company known for its beloved sneakers and skateboarding shoes. Read More

Former Bust intern, Buffi Jashanmal, was one of the designers called in to help design seven dresses for Lady Gaga’s upcoming music video. Avant-garde fashion label House of Diehl was asked to make the dresses in only five days, and Buffy was called in to help complete the nearly impossible task. Some designers pay up to $100,000 for Gaga to wear their clothes, so this is a huge deal for unknown fashion designers looking for a big break.
The designers weren’t given any details about the video, which will be for a song off Gaga’s new album, “Born This Way”. Read More

Watch fashion inspiration Ilona Royce Smithkin in fab fashion blog Advanced Style's new video. Ilona, 90, who favors bold, bright colors, geometric shapes, skilled layering, and self made feather eyelashes, gives some sartorial advice we could all stand to hear: in these capsule collection and it-bag obsessed times, we often forget that fashion is really about how regular people put their clothes on every day- often far more inspiring than an army of models dressed in expensive, stylist-selected get ups. As far as I’m concerned, there is little to nothing not worth analyzing when it comes to pop culture. All our trends, fads, and institutions are reflective of what we value as a society, and one of society’s major indicators is….models! Let us briefly explore the models of the 90’s, who would, most likely, never in a million years be models today, as their looks are currently “out. Read More

In celebration of the opening of their new Soho NY store, I got to check out the Spring line of Dr. Martens and I was super impressed! Everyone knows the classic DM shit-kickers, but I sometimes had a hard time working them into my wardrobe. For the last few years, they’ve been updating the line, by adding heels and color, but this latest crop is by far my favorite. From more refined, suede desert boots, to feminine wedges, to glam heeled sandals, there is really something for everyone. Read More

Some street style I shot while visiting a friend in Boston. I really want to go back, I had such a lovely time.
Maybe it's because I've spent the last four years here but Fall in New York looks nothing like Fall in Boston. The trees turn such beautiful colors- saffrons, rich magentas and emeralds- I kind of wanted to eat the leaves. Or take them home with me and stare at the pretty colors all day long.
But I've digressed- back to street style! Here it is. With high(er) res here. Read More
