Is "Huge" A Big Deal?

BY Emily Rems in TV

So far, online reactions to last night’s premiere of the new ABC Family teen fat camp series Huge are mixed—and for good reason. Created by Winnie Holzman of My So-Called Life and her daughter Savannah Dooley, the show stars Hairspray’s adorable Nikki Blonsky (right) and the gorgeous Hayley Hasselhoff (David’s daughter, left), and is being touted as the antidote to all those skinny teen ensemble shows that relegate fat girls to the margins. A teen drama without any thin actresses...  OMFG.  For the past few weeks I’ve been constantly passing this ad (left) for the new ABC Family series Huge.   And each time I see it, I feel a weird mix of emotions.  On one hand, the ad features a plus sized girl (Hairspray’s Nikki Blonsky) in a bathing suit. On the other hand, she looks depressed and is trying to cover her stomach.   Either way, it effectively sparked my curiosity.  As it turns out, Huge premieres tonight at 9 p. In case you didn't already start your Friday off with a smile, here's a video of the always funny and cute Betty White doing an interview with Asylum's Ron Babcock. Rob tries to woo Betty and asks her advice on dating older women (not cougars, Ron!), and Betty is clearly too cool for the dirty-shirted dude.  UPDATE: Apologies for the video not uploading! Here's a link. Read More
Watch out America, she’s clean and sober!  Regardless of how you feel about the never-ending train wreck that is Courtney Love, I promise her Behind The Music is totally worth the two hours of your time.  Speaking candidly about her messed-up childhood, custody battles, numerous stints in rehab, and what it felt like to be deemed Nirvana’s Yoko Ono, I couldn’t help but find her unnervingly captivating. It’s a Wednesday afternoon and seeing as though you’ve chosen to neglect whatever it is that you should be doing, you could probably use a dose of some female-friendly humor.  So here’s an extended clip from the past season of Parks & Recreation.   In the episode, Leslie insists that the gals tag along on the department's annual boys-only hunting trip. It turns out, she's quite the skilled hunter and is able to catch the first quail of the trip (much to Ron's dismay). When Ron ends up getting shot in the head, she takes the fall for Tom. Read More
Let’s face it: summer network TV programming sucks.  This is usually the time of year when cable and the premium channels thrive and having a Netflix subscription becomes dire.  Fortunately, it appeared that Betty White’s new TV Land sitcom, Hot In Cleveland might be a promising new option.   The show’s debut last Wednesday pulled in a TV Land record of 4.75 million viewers, thus making it the most-watched telecast in the network’s history, according to Entertainment Weekly.   It also debuted to overwhelming positive reviews. Appearing tonight on HBO2 is Israeli filmmaker Zippi Brand Frank’s award-winning documentary Google Baby, about online shopping at its most bizarre.  The film opens with the idea that in the 1960s, the development of the birth control pill “took the baby-making out of sex.”  Today, with the development of advanced fertility treatments, the Internet, and the global marketplace the Internet facilitates, we have the technology to “take the sex out of making babies. I feel as though I should start with a declaimer:  Content in this blog may be unsuitable for children. Actually, if you’re a girl under the age of 18, please don’t continue reading. I don’t want to be responsible for exposing an entire generation of young woman to this. So just go do your homework or something.    It’s unclear whether this dance move originated in Brazilian nightclubs or their bedrooms, but I can only assume sex was initially involved. Read More

Every summer we are treated to a slew of supposed blockbusters specifically designed to knock off socks, or at the very least, give us somewhere cool and dark to sit for twoish hours. Certainly this season will be no different, judging from Hollywood’s attempts to revive The Karate Kid, Predators, Cats and Dogs (…?), the Toy Story franchise (!!), and The A-Team (which, I have to admit, just will not be the same without Mr. T…Bradley Cooper or not.).
