Jenny Nordberg, who wrote “Undercover Sister” for our Oct/Nov issue this year, was interviewed last Monday on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In the interview she discussed a practice in Afghanistan, where some families disguise a daughter as a son and raise her as a boy until she hits puberty. The interview goes into the reasoning behind the practice, and its long-term effect psychologically on the girls who experience such shifts.  Afghanistan being a deeply patriarchal society, the birth of a girl is often far from a joyous event. You might not know who Sister Rosemary is, or where she lives, or what she does to make this world a better place, but after watching the new SnagFilms film "Sewing Hope" her message and her story will touch your heart forever.  The film, which mixes first person narration from Forest Whitaker, edgy animation, and compelling stories of hope, uncovers the 25-year reign of terror that the infamous Lord's Resistance Army thrust upon Northern Uganda. Innocent children were kidnapped and brainwashed into being soldiers for Joseph Kony and his army. Read More
Self-described writer, comedian, and cheeseburger aficionado, Megan MacKay, presents her witty censure of Ray Rice and the NFL via another clever makeup tutorial. If you like this one, check out her youtube channel where she roasts Hobby Lobby and other gender-offenders weekly. Her videos are especially bold because the acerbic one-liners attacking misogyny are delivered with an eyeshadow brush. There are a lot of layers here: she is defending femininity, subverting expectations of feminism, and exposing the foundations of systemic injustice. We can’t wait to see more. Read More

Everyone Is Gay

BY BUST Magazine in TV

What would you do if I told you that everyone is gay? Assumedly, you would vehemently object, citing the socially- and culturally-defined “normal” orientation that is heterosexuality. But let's say everyone were gay. Then, what if — with the stigma of LGBTQ-ness out of the way — our identities were just accepted in a way that LGBTQ identities, currently, are not?  That's the concept behind which Everyone Is Gay was founded. Kristin Russo and Dannielle Owens-Reid started the website back in 2010, which was originally going to be a funny advice column. Read More
Apparently some guys still think it's okay to clap at women on the street, as if it's a classier way to catcall. "It's not harassment! It's appreciation!" they cry. Well, we won't accept that answer and we call shenanigans. Jessica Williams is all too familiar with this brand of bullshit and on The Daily Show last week, she made it known this behavior is unacceptable.   "Our walk to work is not there for him to comment on. It's not a red carpet, it's not a Fashion Week runway, it's a sidewalk. Read More
When the hosts of the web show "PolitiChicks" made a guest appearance on "Fox & Friends" this past Tuesday, they voiced opinions that probably would have been offensive if they hadn't been so deeply confusing. The occasion for the PolitiChicks' visit to "Fox & Friends" was the release of their new book, entitled "What Women Really Want." After listening to their interview, I have serious doubts that the PolitiChicks even know what women are.  The PolitiChicks – Ann-Marie Murrell, Morgan Brittany and Dr. Read More
Chances are you may have never heard of the Starz original series Party Down, because we were only given 20 precious episodes of the show before it was wrongfully canceled, but now you have no excuse because it's free to stream on Hulu! Okay, technically, the first 5 episodes are free and the rest are on Hulu Plus.  When I first heard about the show in college, I was told things like "Trust me, watch it. The whole thing. Read More
Beyoncé gave a major shoutout to our favorite dirty word, flashing “FEMINIST” in lights behind her during last night’s Video Music Awards performance. Text filled the screen for the sampling of novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TEDx Talk on embracing feminism, leaving no ambiguity that one of America’s biggest pop stars is indeed a gender right’s icon. Somebody please bring me a paper bag, because I’m hyperventilating right now. Why? Because Jennifer Saunders has just released new info regarding the Absolutely Fabulous movie, and it’s big.  Earlier this year, Saunders confirmed that she had started writing the script for the movie spin-off of her hit sitcom.  She told the press in May that she was angling for the film to be released towards the end of 2015. Just this summer, a new announcement was made. Read More
