State Senator Jason Rapert, sponsor of the "Human Heartbeat Protection Act." Yesterday, the Arkansas State Senate passed a law banning abortion after the 12th week of pregnancy; this is by far the most restrictive abortion ban in the country. The justification for this law, which was passed by a republican-run legislature over the veto of Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, is that a fetal heartbeat can be detected at 12 weeks. Girl Rising is not a movie about oppression and victimhood. This is not to say that the nine girls that the movie stars have not faced staggering obstacles due to their gender, race, and class. These girls, who are representative of millions of girls worldwide, are survivors of natural disasters and national tragedies. They inhabit worlds where young girls are commoditized, over-worked, abused and silenced.  Suma, a young Nepalese woman, was sold into Kamaiya, a form of domestic slavery, at six years old. Ukrainian feminist group Femen has become famous for their unique form of feminist activism: topless protests.  Since 2009, Femen activists have lifted their shirts in political and social demonstrations in Ukraine and Western Europe, using these shocking and eye-catching stunts to grab the attention of the media and to spread their message.  However, Femen is now moving to expand on a global level. Femen has just announced that they are now taking their topless protests around the world in order to highlight issues ranging from democratic violations to sexual exploitation. Read More
Several Christian institutions have notoriously severe punishments for sexual activity, but none seem quite as cruel as the case of San Diego Christian College employee Teri James. After the school discovered she was pregnant with a co-worker's child, they not only fired her, but offered her partner a job. The school claims they fired James for the act of premarital sex, but they were well aware that her now-husband Brandon James was the father when they contacted him. Read More
