When you think of Disney princesses, feminism isn’t the first thing to come to mind.   Disney princesses are not strong representations of feminism – most have to be rescued by their male love interest, and the films generally end with marriages or engagements of the female character. Catcalling is such a common phenomenon that a lot of people have learned to just ignore it. But this week, activists all over the world want to let everyone know that any form of street harassment is not okay. People in Philadelphia, Boston, Colombia, the Czech Republic, and many more have been posting ads on the non-profit organization Hollaback!'s Facebook for anti-street harassment week (April 7-13). Advocates hope that increased attention to this all-too-frequent occurrence will help prevent the sorts of tragedies that made bullying a hot-button issue. Read More
In a recent interview with, Gloria Steinem said she approves of Lena Dunham. The interview took place at the DVF Awards, a ceremony that honors women who have "leadership, strength, and courage in their respective fields." Steinem said she believes the world is very different from when she first started fighting for women’s rights. She also said she is pleased the younger generation is “stepping up like never before.” “There are many more young feminists now than there are older ones," Steinem continued. Read More
The Ugandan government has proposed a bill that will allow women to be arrested for wearing skirts above their knees in public.  This proposed law, which directly targets women, isn’t entirely new to the Ugandan people. Uganda’s third President, Idi Amin 1971-1979 (who you may remember as depicted in the film The Last King of Scotland), also banned short skirts in a decree during his time in office.  Currently wearing short skirts is not illegal, but culturally it is deemed improper if a woman exposes her knees or shoulders.   In response to The World's 50 Best Restaurants' Best Female Chef award this week, Anthony Bourdain bemoaned on twitter: "Why — at this point in history — do we need a 'Best Female Chef' special designation? As if they are curiosities?"   Best Female Chef of 2013, Nadia Santini Good point.
