Model Lauren Wasser is suing Kotex after losing her leg to TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Tampons have had warnings that tampon use could lead to TSS since the 1980s, but the design and makeup of tampons hasn’t changed to reduce this risk. Basically, tampon companies have slapped on the TSS warning and ran away from liability—thanks, guys! TSS occurs when there is staphylococcus aureus bacteria (staph) that grow rapidly and release poison in the bloodstream. Thousands of people voted this spring in a super-cool campaign run by Women on 20s to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. (Harriet Tubman was the winner!) As of yesterday, the goal of putting a woman on paper money has become a reality—in 2020, a woman will finally appear on the $10 bill.  The U.S. Treasury Department planned a fabulous woman’s $10 debut as a celebration of the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage. On June 4, Barnard College—a women's college operated in partnership with Columbia University—announced a new policy of admitting trans women. Throughout the last year, student and alumni activists have worked with the Barnard administration to make this change possible. Barnard will now be admitting students who “consistently live and identify as women, regardless of the gender assigned to them at birth. Read More
When winners of the Flanders Diamond Tour—the final race of the women's Lotto Cycling Cup—arrived at the podium this past Sunday, they were greeted with... women wearing bikinis!? Cyclist and journalist Marijn de Vries tweeted a picture of the podium, calling it an “utter disgrace." And it is a disgrace: The podium was meant to honor the women who had won this race. Celebrating their achievements with women in bikinis makes no sense at all. Read More
