He is also an outspoken feminist. After 15 years in the making, the Babayagas’ House — a feminist alternative to a retirement home — has finally opened in Paris. Named after the word “witch” in Slavic mythology, this incredible place is a self-managed social housing project run by a community of inspiring female senior citizens who want to keep their independence. “To live long is a good thing but to age well is better,” says the 85-year-old Thérèse Clerc who dreamed up the project back in 1999. When I proclaimed myself a feminist in middle school, I tried my best to seek out feminist peers—they had to be somewhere, right?! Alas, at the age of 12 in my tiny town, there were no feminists to be found.
Yet by high school, the term “feminism” was popping up beyond the little sidebar about women’s lib in my textbooks. Feminism was all over Tumblr and Twitter and even the social media of the mainstream: Facebook. Students and teachers alike made feminism part of the conversation. Read More
In news that will make you groan, people STILL get upset about women breastfeeding in public places. In Terre Haute, Indiana, for example, one young woman was publicly shamed by a man who took a photo of her (without her knowledge, yuck) breastfeeding in a T.G.I Friday’s.
