It’s no secret that undocumented young people have been at the forefront in the fight for the Dream Act. The New York Times has called these immigrants “highly visible and vocal activists” unafraid to demand a rightful place in the country they have called home for most of their lives. For the past decade, Congress has been stalling on the act, which would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who meet various requirements. Read More
Have you ever ziplined? It involves an invigorating slide on a line while holding onto a bar above your head. Have you ever ziplined naked? It involves, well, nudity. And for 100 women in British Columbia, it involves charity.   ZipZone Adventures is holding its second annual nude ziplining event June 21. Billed as ZipZone Naked 100, the zipline park hopes to enlist the help of 100 women to zipline in various stages of undress. Each participant is being asked to raise at least $100 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the goal is to raise at least $20,000. Read More
The BUST blog has kept you abreast of many of the appalling attacks on reproductive rights in the United States, most recently through the story of the two Michigan state representatives who were banned from speaking on the House floor for using the words “vagina” and “vasectomy” in a debate over abortion-related legislation.   From women on birth control being publicly referred to as “sluts,” to Michigan representative Lisa Brown being silenced on the House floor after referencing her vagina during an abortion debate, I think it’s safe to say the 2012 election season has been confusing, if not downright disturbing, for many women (and like-minded men). Today might mark the summer solstice, but for presumptive Republican Party nominee Mitt Romney, the date might borrow from a different holiday, Halloween, more than is usual for summertime campaign stops. That is to say that Romney should be planning for the predicted appearance of  Pillamina, Planned Parenthood's costumed avenger, at his Troy, Michigan, fundraiser tonight. Read More
If you follow world news at all, you probably know that things look pretty bleak in Syria these days. The violence there is bloody and ongoing, and the international community seems unsure of the best way to restore a sense of stability. But a new documentary shows that there is another, more positive, revolution taking place in Syria, at least in regards to one woman’s efforts to educate young girls and to change attitudes about women’s relationship with Islam. Larry Getlen at the New York Post interviewed Adam Carolla today to talk about his new book, which is about growing up in North Hollywood, and probably a lot of other things no one cares about. Today, he's saying a bunch of inflammatory stuff-- probably to try to gain some sort of cultural relevance other than his podcast or old show. One of those things is that women aren't funny. For a dude whose old TV show was based almost entirely on making fun of women, or women on jumping on trampolines, it makes you wonder if he knows anything about comedy. Read More
