The season of love, giving, and unadulterated stress is upon us. You empty out your wallet and watch as the last piece of lint drift to the floor like a snowflake. In the background you can hear Bing Crosby crooning Christmas tunes, but there is no joy to be had in the land of poor college students and post-grads. Before you sink to the floor with a notepad, tissues, and possibly some Kahlüa to figure out how you're going to buy Tiny Tim that gift, check out this round up of D.I.Y. gifts  found on Pinterest. None of the projects will land you in the holiday poor house. Read More
Rabbit kidneys, roasted marrowbones, and monkfish liver do not necessarily evoke the images of comfort food for many. But for some reason this term has always been used to describe the cuisine chef Gabrielle Hamilton prepares in her East Village restaurant, Prune. “They have to attach these words to anything that a woman is doing no matter how challenging,” she said in an interview on Makers, a video collection of women’s stories featured on PBS this past September. Time then to put the spotlight on London-based ceramicist Amy Worrall, who will be bringing her colorful ceramics to the fair this year. Amy Worrall makes a range of functional and decorative objects that draw on her background in illustration. Her ceramics are inspired by topless girls in Florida and sunburnt Brits abroad on the Costa de Sol, using the majolica technique to achieve vivid, neon colours. Read More
In September we ran a competition with British online marketplace Folksy to win a free stall space at the BUST Christmas Craftacular in London. The winner was I Am Acrylic with its quirky plastic jewelry designs. Ruth and Brendan started making jewelry in 2004 and hand-cut all their pieces on a fretsaw (so no lasers here) in their London studio. And at the December 14 BUST Christmas Craftacular they will be running workshops all day so that you can cut out and keep your very own acrylic necklace or keyring. Read More
I've been a big fan of Kirsty Kirkpatrick's Uncommonly Beautiful range of upcylced jewelry for a number of years; I own several pieces and I'm always super-pleased to see her stall at the London BUST Craftacular. "The label is an anti-land fill fashion accessory label," founded by Kirsty in June 2006. She pieces together vintage elements into modern designs – sometimes subtle and delicate, sometime big and bold. More recently, her designs have included discarded wooden furniture, which forms the base material for Kirkpatrick's bright screen-printed and laser-etched patterns. Read More
