With the release of this month’s Superman movie, the action movie industry adds another film to its androcentric repertoire. The few years have seen the release of films such as The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spiderman, Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, and Iron Man. Don’t get me wrong: many of those were great superhero flicks, but the two major female heroes in those movies were both minor, oversexed figures in skintight suits. Many of those male superheroes are notable, but so is Wonder Woman. Read More
Former Miss Iowa Abbey Curran will be the first to admit: “beauty pageants invite judgement.” But for contestants of Abbey’s annual Miss You Can Do It pageant, judgement isn’t new. A documentary airing tonight on HBO explores the lives of the pageant’s contestants – young girls with disabilities and challenges. Instead of being scored on what they can do or how they look, the pageant’s focus is on “how bright their heart light shines,” and everyone goes home a winner. Read More
They say that behind every great man, there's a great woman. And while that quote doesn't exactly sit well with me, it's definitely true in the case of the women profiled in the new documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom. The film chronicles some of the most frequently heard women in the music industry, though there's a solid chance you don't know their names or have ever seen their faces. Director Morgan Neville profiles the backup singers who've enhanced the work of countless major artists in the biz: the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Bruce Springsteen. Read More
Listen up, marshmallows – the good news about the Veronica Mars movie just keeps rolling in, and we couldn’t be more excited. To catch you up on a little VMars history, the brilliant series was on air from 2004 to 2007, starring Kristen Bell as a feminist heroine who kicked major ass and addressed her own vulnerability in equal parts.      The show had everything: a tightly plotted mystery, the sluethiest, snarkiest scenes, incomparable amounts of heart, and a love (LOgan/VEronica) story for the ages. You know his voice. As the lights dim leisurely, as you reach for your second handful of perfectly salted popcorn, as you are beseeched, repeatedly, to please silence your phones – you hear his familiar intonations greet your ears hello. And yet, why is the narrator always a he? The trailer for Lake Bell’s In A World... is finally out (we’ve been excited about this for a while; refer back to 10 Must-See Lady-Friendly Summer Flicks)! The movie, which the multitalented Bell wrote and directed, explores why film preview voice-overs are perpetually male. Read More
The Bling Ring is based on a true story so strange, it could only have happened in the moneyed ’burbs of L.A. Five teens—four girls, one guy—take their obsession with luxe living to the next level by burglarizing celebrity homes for thrills, bills, and prescription pills. In Sofia Coppola’s retelling of the crew’s crimes, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Katie Chang, Claire Julien, and Israel Broussard play teens as familiar with couture fashion and exclusive nightclubs as they are with drugs and gangster rap. Everyone’s favorite cartoon redheaded boy is set to star in a feature film adaptation of the 72-year-old comic series Archie. The live action movie will be directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) and the screenplay will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacsa (Glee). I got to talking to my friend C.C., of the Actress Model Whatever podcast, last night about stuff and shit and we got around to discussing worthwhile things to do this Summer that didn't involve debauchery. I had to admit that I hadn't planned a single thing this Summer that didn't involve catering to some selfish whim or another.  She mentioned Zeno Mountain Farm, an organization that runs camps in Venice Beach, Vermont, Guatemala and Florida. They're set up to foster life-long relationships between creatives of varying physical and mental abilities. Read More
