Yesterday was pretty much amazing. Before even arriving in Austin for SXSW, I knew that I was going to be seeing Hole play at the Spin Magazine party being held at Stubb's BBQ. The organizers of the event sent laminate passes via Fedex, which was fancy and exciting enough, but then when I read "complimentary beverages provided by ..." my excitement level went through the top of my head. So even though excitement was for sure present, there was a certain amount of, oh, comedy involved in the idea of seeing Courtney Love play as Hole, with an entirely new band. Read More
I woke up reeeeeaaaallllly early today so I could contribute to a supercool segment on the WNYC morning radio show The Takeaway. It was all about The Runaways and how the film compares to other great girl band movies. We talked about Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and even threw in some girl band movie trivia! If you missed the magic - don't fret. You can check out the whole segment below. Read More
Well I have been here in Austin for SXSW since Tuesday, but am just settling down at a computer now because there is SO much going on that I literally haven't had my hands free for a second!  On Wednesday I went to a party at The Beauty Bar that showcased Mantler and Ben + Vesper, among others. The show was thrown by K Records, Asthmatic Kitty, Tomlab and Sounds Familyre. There were some minor equipment glitches in the opening set, but all-in-all, the show was a fun little romp.     Thursday was jam packed with awesome bands, and TWO very fun Bust events. Read More

Runaways Premiere!

BY Laurie in Music

Last night I went to the star studded NYC premiere and party for the Runaways film, written and directed by the mad talented Floria Sigismondi. The audience was a hot pepper mix of rockers and celebs, who showed up to pay homage to all things Runaways, one of the most inspirational bands to rock chicks everywhere! I met my pal Cristina at the sunshine theater, (after much worry about what the hell I would wear! –note, settled on the classic black dress w ubiquitous leather jacket, and a crazy necklace made by Tracie Howarth of Brooklyn Charm). Review: The Runaways

BY Emily Rems in Music

Flicks about girl bands often follow the same trajectory: rebellious young women wanna skip town on the high heels of their rock ‘n’ roll dreams, but men tell them it’s impossible because “girls can’t rock.” Through a series of montages, the band ultimately gets good enough to prove they deserve a chance. And once given that big break, they launch headlong into all the pitfalls of fame. Think Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, think Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, and yes, think of the bio-pic The Runaways as well. All follow along these same lines. Read More

"When I saw Madonna in a corset for the first time, I was like, 'Hey, I did that first.' " --Cherie Currie, lead singer of The Runaways, to the New York Times     The much anticipated Runaways biopic opens in New York this week.  And it's cool that people are talking about them so much because, all Madonna-Runaways career comparisons aside (theirs-- short and somewhat managed, hers--long and self-propelled) they really did start something.  And not only that, they handed it on. There are many sassy ladies out today that I admire and the enigmatic Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of them. She's a whimsical musician, talented actress, and now she's going on tour! (Oh, and she's in our Feb/Mar issue, by the way!) The North American tour is going to kick off in April, on the cusp of her bangin' album, IRM (produced by Beck). Her North American tour includes a stop at Coachella on April 18th, going on stage before Pavement, Thom Yorke, and Gorillaz. Read More
As I sat down to write this blog, JC Penney (yeah, the store) sent me a friend request on Facebook. Weird.  Anyway! I'm not sure what the weather is like where YOU are sitting and reading this right now, but it's dark and drizzly here in NYC. I am keeping my spirits high by packing my suitcase for my flight to Austin tomorrow for SXSW, where I will be blogging from the trenches , and also by listening to the debut self-titled CD by Happy Birthday, which comes out on Sub Pop tomorrow.
