It’s been a while since we’ve heard from powerhouse rapper Remy Ma. After all, for the last six and a half years, she’s been serving time at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for assault. But even the youngest hip-hop heads will recognize the 34-year-old’s smooth lyrical delivery from the 2004 Terror Squad track “Lean Back” with Fat Joe, which earned her a Grammy nod and a place on every “best of hip-hop” list.   A Christmas carol to put all other Christmas carols to shame - "White Privilege" written by the team at Lady Parts Justice to the tune of "White Christmas" is the perfect holiday reflection on everything that has been happening in our country during the past few months (and for a solid portion of our entire history). Set on the streets of Brooklyn, five women of color slowly sway past brownstones singing their revised rendition of the holiday classic, as two white police officers stalk behind them and a bunch of white people do illegal things without a glance from the officers. Check out this new video for Maya Angelou’s track “Pickin’ ‘Em Up,” off the recently released album, Caged Bird Songs. Named after her 1969 autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the album combines Angelou’s vocal performances with rad hip-hop and funk beats. Angelou’s grandson, Colin Johnson, told NPR that he hopes this blend will appeal to younger generations. "One of the things that she speaks to, for me at least, is our humanity and where we can go as a people coming together," he says. "It's a valuable message, no matter what generation. Read More

Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas) has released a third video from his third album, this year’s critically acclaimed, Too Bright. “Fool” marks his second collaboration, after “Grid,” with director Charlotte Rutherford. Yesterday punk/riot grrrl band Sleater-Kinney hosted a Reddit AMA where they not only answered questions from fans, but also released the new single "Surface Envy" from their new album No Cities to Love (Sub Pop), which is their first album in 10 years! The album comes out January 20.
