Neil the lion is going viral, following a Retronaut post on Mashable earlier this week. Neil was the household pet of actors Tippi Hedren and Noel Marshall, and Hedren's daughter Melanie Griffith, in 1971. Griffith was 19 years old in the photos. The family lived together on a ranch in California while Hedren and Marshall prepared for their 1981 film Roar.  Melanie and Neil lay in bed.  Tippi Hedren reads on Neil. Hedren is best known for her ... Read More
For those of you who are hip to the podcast scene, the voice of Ira Glass has likely become a ubiquitous fixture on your daily commute. The host of This American Life may sweep you away with his clever segues and wistful stories of the American experience, but TAL is finite, and sometimes you’ve got to step out of the playlist. (Though not too far, just yet.) This week’s podcast is Serial, a spanking new This American Life spinoff hosted by Sarah ... Read More
The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the latest efforts by Susan G. Komen for the Cure appears to be a somewhat misguided attempt to promote the cause. A partnership between Komen and Baker Hughes, a Houston-based drilling service company, has left us questioning their current pink-washing method. The campaign, “Doing Our Bit for the Cure” involves a $100,000 donation from Baker Hughes to Komen, and 1,000 drill bits receiving the ... Read More
What is a Fire Horse Woman, you ask? In the Chinese Zodiac, each birth year is assigned an animal and an element. In fact, 2014 is the year of the horse. When the horse and the element of fire align, it is said to create the Fire Horse, also known as hinoeuma. In East Asian culture and astrology, women born in the year of the fire horse are considered unlucky and to have poor relations with men. According to gotohoroscopes.com, “a person born as a Fire ... Sometimes we get some interesting snacks in the office when we least expect them. Today we got a little hungry, so we ended up trying these freaky little things; more specifically, we tried the Chili Pumpkin Seed Crunch flavor of the Wonderfully Raw Brussel Bytes (made with real brussel sprouts!). Why not!  These... clusters... describe themselves as "nutrient packed bytes of goodness." "Goodness" is not usually what I care about in a snack, but it doesn't ... Read More

If you live in the L.A. area and you’re a fan of cocktails, rad ladies, and giving money to a good cause, you need to head over to Harvard & Stone tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 6th, at 9pm. That night, the ladies of Speed Rack—the national cocktail-making competition for female bartenders, which BUST profiled in our Aug/Sept issue—will be in town for a ridiculously fun charity event. 30 lady mixologists from across the country will converge to make Sailor ... Don’t see St. Vincent for its complex characters. Though the cast is promising (Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd and Bill Murray, to name a few), the movie is altogether disappointing. There are definitely no strong female characters to speak of, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the overwhelming lack of any multi-dimensional character, regardless of gender. I do recognize and applaud the fact, however, that the actors do the best with what ... Read More
