Shu Okada has lived in Tokyo, studied at Central St. Martins in London and is now living it up as a Brooklyn artist. Her illustrations have an eerie sophistication beneath a childlike mask. She uses a unique white-line style which creates strange, fragmented tension and adds to the mystery of her work. In addition to being an illustrator, Shu is also a photographer. Her photographs and watercolors both portray the contained, luminous energy captured in still moments of life. Shu talks to BUST: If your art was music/food, what would it sound/taste like? Chai tea. It's Buy Indie Day!

BY Web Intern in General

It's like May Day, but with more books and fewer poles. Probably less dancing, too. OK, so, nothing like May Day. May 1 has been declared Buy Indie Day by IndieBound.com. Go to your nearest independent bookstore and buy at least one book! The day is supposed to be for books, but why stop there? Go out and support your favorite indie artists, clothing designers, jewelry shops, record stores and whatever else you want, too. -Liza (Photo via flickr. Read More

Learning How I Roll

Remember back when one of our lovely interns posted about Bike Chic ? It got me thinking - can everyone on the planet ride a bike but me? I know; it's a little embarrassing. I'm 25 and I can't really bike. Oddly, in a city where a 20-something without a driver's license is fairly common, not being able to ride anything but the stationary in my gym feels shameful. The last time I tried to ride something with two wheels I was about 14. Let's just say it didn't go well. I went careening diagonally across a parking lot (I only made it about 5 feet) until I tipped over. Read More

If you're scared that obsessively washing your hands isn't enough to protect you from swine flu, you might want to consider wearing a surgical mask. But, then you're going to encounter a dilemma - how can I wear a bland white surgical mask with this kickin' outfit? It'll throw off my whole look! FluFashion.net has come out with a line of masks that have patterned and colored covers. You can get tie-dye or bandanna masks, each that will filter out anything larger than .3 microns 95% of the time (a human hair is 100 microns). Read More
When your gays call, you better pick up. Or in this case, when they email. My good friend Craig (the fabulous DJ Smithmix who DJed our 15 year anniversary party last August) sent me some goodies today, one of which was a link to a very cool blog by NY drag superstars Brandy Wine and Brenda A. Go Go. I just about lost it on this fake Karma Chameleon phone, sanctioned by Boy George himself. Hilarious. It seems like it may have actually been a real phone back in the day, who knows? I probably would have bought one, its more amusing than the fish that sings. Read More
