BUST's Summer Craftacular hits London August 22, and there are so many awesome and exciting alternative crafting vendors! It's going to be a great event--live demonstrations, music and dancing, and drinks! Two of my favorites are the insanely adorable Mr. PS , maker of tea towels, mugs, and shopping bags emblazoned with cheeky but not cheesy slogans--and such cute designs and colors! It is difficult to find independent bookstores in today's ultra-homogenized corporate land, and many locally owned and run booksellers have suffered significantly.  But the Chicago-based feminist bookstore and publishing house, Women and Children First , have continued to exist, though not without struggle, and will be celebrating 30th anniversary at a Gala on October 3, 2009 with special guests Alison Bechdel and Dorothy Allison. A Gel That Blocks HIV?

About 3 years ago I read about microbicides, a type of gel or film that blocks HIV when used vaginally. I made hundreds of flyers about it, posted it around my university and the Women's Center, yet no one took me seriously. I myself began to wonder if microbicides were real. Today we saw this article on HIV-blocking gel . It sounds almost like science fiction, without the futuristic dystopia: 'Before sex, women would insert a vaginal gel that turns semisolid in the presence of semen, trapping AIDS virus particles in a microscopic mesh so they can't infect vaginal cells'.
