If you saw 2007's 'Waitress' starring Keri Russell, chances are you remember director/supporting actress Adrienne Shelly, who nearly stole the movie as Dawn, Russell's funny, quirky waitress friend looking for love. After the film was released it received numerous awards at independent film festivals. Tragically, just before its release Shelly was murdered in her New York City office by a construction worker. Monday, August 3, a memorial garden honoring the late Shelly will be unveiled at Abington Square Park located at 8th Avenue and 12th Street in New York. Read More

Cheat Well, Eat Well

I'm pretty daring when it comes to food. Well, maybe not daring, but adventurous. Okay, maybe 'open-minded' is the term. I love trying new things, but, let's face it, I love it even more when I know a bit about what I'm biting into. Luckily, the evil mad scientists over at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories have come to the aid of suspicious foodies--at least when they're dining South Indian. Read More

Fearless FeWhales

When I was in second grade, I was OBSESSED with whales. Not kidding. I drew whales, I watched TV shows about whales, I listened to whale noises on CD (ever wonder who bought those 'Song of the Humpback' albums? Yeah, that was me). And why? Duh: because on top of being the most amazing, intelligent, gorgeous animals ever, their lifeguarding skills are top notch! According to The Sun , a beluga whale (yes, like the Raffi song) literally saved a woman incapacitated and drowning during an aquarium diving contest in China. Read More
Okay, I have a confession to make: I love postcards.  But who doesn't?  Nothing fills my heart with honest-to-goodness sentimentality like a 4x6 piece of flimsy cardboard sent from a friend in a faraway place.  That's why when I saw an exhibit dedicated solely to postcards featuring ''bathing beauties'' of the 20th Century is opening, I instantly knew it would be a gush-worthy spread of feminist nostalgia. Empire of the Sun ! I kind of have a crush on the one with the long hair.  The video above is a broadcast they did on July 22, it went for a little over 6 mins during the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century. I'm loving all of it. Except that my new Aussie crush is all covered up in the first video but its still amazing. Another video after the jump cause I'm so in like with them. Read More

We're All Mad Here...

Already worn out your Mad Men DVDs? For something to do while you wait for the premiere of the third season of Mad Men (coming August 16th), AMCtv.com has given you the fun little project of Mad Mennin' Yourself. Have fun making a cartoon caricature of yourself from the '60s. I admit, I spent a good portion of last night working at making a spitting image of myself. And then spent more time making more characters, like when I was a wee girl dressing paper dolls. You can start here. Read More
Normally I would be hard-pressed to say who turns me off more: Sarah Palin or William Shatner. Smarmy, opportunistic, vapid--the similarities are uncanny. But I've changed my tune since watching this already-infamous rendering of Palin's farewell speech by Shatner on Conan O'Brien. Pure comedic gold. It almost makes my Palin-induced nausea and disbelieving rage seem like a distant, bemusing memory. Almost. Watch it here. Unrelated but interesting: Shatner was kinda a hottie back when. Read More
