Spare the Rod

According to the AP , a woman in Malaysia is sentenced to be caned after pleading guilty to drinking a beer. Baffled? Same here. Here's some background: Apparently, Malaysia has a two-pronged approach to governing its citizens. Muslims in the country follow with Islamic law and court systems, while non-Muslims are subject to civil law. And while both systems recognize caning as a valid sentence, only the Islamic law condemns drinking. So when 32 year old, sometimes-model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was found drinking in a club last year, she was in direct violation of Islamic law. Read More

Hooked On Ponyo

BY Libby Zay in General

At the movies this past weekend, Ponyo had me completely submerged.  A treat for viewers of any age, the under-the-sea themed animated film made my heart swell with admiration for the spunky, red-haired, female protagonist.  My ears were perked, too: with voices lent from Tina Fey and Betty White, what's not-to-love? Breathtaking visuals and all-star vocal cast aside, the master storyteller behind the fairy tale, Hayao Miyazaki, deserves some serious brownie points. Read More

A Friend of My Mind

Don't miss out on Toni Morrison speaking tomorrow night! The pulitizer-prize winning, paradigm-shifting, consummate literary bad-ass will be discussing her latest novel, A Mercy, at 7pm at the Barnes and Noble in Union Square. I cannot wait for this--I've loved her work for so long. Read More
The Michigan Humane Society is having great success with their new 'Certified Pre-Owned Cats' promotion ('0% down, 0% financing, No payments!'). With cheeky posters promising a multi-point inspection and that many of their cats are loaded with attractive features (standard 4-paw drive!), the MHS is trying to get as many cats adopted as possible during the summer month, traditionally the time when shelters get overwhelmed with unwanted kittens (and, sadly, have to put the majority of them down). The Ali Forney Center (AFC), the nation's largest organization dedicated to homeless LGBT youth, is naming its newest shelter after Bea Arthur in honor of her support. Founder Carl Siciliano explains 'The caring and concern that Bea expressed for our kids meant the world to us, and we are thrilled to be able to give honor to her memory in this way'. Bea Arthur contributed both funds and support to the AFC.  In an interview with Next Magazine she said 'I'm very, very involved in charities involving youth and the plight of foster children. Thanks to the Feminist Law Professors, I heard Virgina Woolf's voice for the first time this morning.  As I cuddled up to the tiny speakers on my computer I felt a little giddy.   This is the only known recording of Woolf's voice. It is from a 1937 BBC radio conference and it is beautiful. Read More
Do your favorite art forms get downgraded to ''craft''?  From sewing to horror flicks, many of our beloved pursuits are condemned by the masses as passe or campy.  Comics are no exception to this rule of kitsch; often mixed with romance novels and Ring Pops in the grocery store checkout lane--a catchall for our culture's most ''tacky'' items--only the daring pore over their contents in the public eye. An exhibit in Columbus, Ohio titled ''This Is A Comic Book'' has set its sight on challenging many of our assumptions about comics. Read More
As was previously noted, Madonna recently turned 51. I think it's time for her to ditch her manpanion and pair up with someone she can grow really old with. But who's man enough to date Madonna? She's rich, she's powerful, she's beautiful, she's funny, she's smart. I thought she'd finally found love with Guy Ritchie, but even he didn't manage to love the girl till death them do part. I have a feeling that what Madonna really, really wants in life is a partner. It always amazed me that in a world where even Steven Hawking can cheat on his wife (!!!!), Madonna can't find a lasting partnership. Read More
Who says big girls don't cry?  A recently-released--not to mention pointless--poll estimates that women who live to age 78 will cry for 16 months of their life.  That's 12,000 hours of your precious time wasted sobbing away! Okay, okay... I'm a pretty sensitive lady.  I'm not ashamed to admit that I was more than a little bleary eyed during my last break up, and I'm always sure to have Kleenex handy when Homeward Bound is replayed on TV (come on, when Shadow limps over that hill at the end whose eyes don't instantly moisten?).
