Lately it seems that everyone has been listening to the Serial podcast (BUST included!), a story told weekly to figure out if Adnan Syed is truly guilty of killing his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. The hit podcast is currently number one on iTunes and its dedicated listeners are discussing their own theories. The current obsession has inspired three comedians to make a parody. Upright Citizen Brigade comedians, Paul Laudiero, Zach Cherry and Will Stephen are behind this hilarious joke. So far the three have created five videos, the most recent two released last night. Rehtaeh Parsons’ story is taking over Twitter, following news that there will be no jail time for the now 20-year-old man who pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in September. The photographer will receive a one-year conditional discharge, as well as a mandatory DNA sample for a national database. The charges are regarding a photo taken in 2011, which showed Rehtaeh throwing up while the photographer’s friend allegedly sexually assaulted her. Everyone involved was a minor at the time. Throwing Shade is the kind of podcast you would make with your best friend. Just like how Broad City portrays Abbi and Ilana's friendship so perfectly that you feel like you and your friend ARE Abbi and Ilana, Throwing Shade is like you and your friend but even wittier, and with microphones. Self-described "feminasty" Erin Gibson and "homosensual" Bryan Safi met at UCB LA but really clicked when they were both writing for Current TV, where Erin hosted "Modern Lady" and where I first watched Bryan Safi hosting "That's Gay. A party was held at a Brown University fraternity on Oct 17, and two students came forward about drinking an alcoholic punch, which was not actually allowed at the function, and one woman has tested positive for the date rape drug, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). The Brown chapter of Phi Kappa Psi resides at the residency hall, Sears House, and is the only fraternity there. The Huffington Post noted that although the student reported the assault to campus police, a criminal investigation can only start if she also reports it to the Providence police. Read More
The love and dating gurus over at Meetville (the dating app) created this super educational infographic and we just had to share it with you. Where else can you get this many informative facts about "tities"? In case you couldn't tell from the title of the post "Men's Love Starts Behind the Bra," this horrible, typo-ridden, boob-filled fact sheet reduces women to their breasts in every way— how much they weigh, how much they cost, how "a small percentage of women can even reach orgasm through breast play alone" (um, who are these women??).     I attended my first game jam ever this weekend at NYU’s Gaming Center and I was incredibly nervous and intimidated. I was invited by one of the ladies of Code Liberation, an all-girl organization that aims to level the playing field in the game world and provides free game programing classes to women in order to create gender equality in the gaming industry. This particular event was hosted by a research center centered around game studies and design, digital culture and interactive art. Read More
How to Build a Girl, Caitlin Moran's debut novel, which sold more than half a million copies in more than 16 countries worldwide, is being turned into a movie. Cue the applause. The story is centered on Johanna Morrigan, a young girl who dreams of leaving behind her hometown of Wolverhampton and ultimately ventures forth to reinvent herself (i.e. moves to London, becomes a music critic and calls herself Dolly Wilde).   Victoria's Secret has pulled their controversial campaign for "The Perfect 'Body'," following a petition to change the bra campaign. The petition was started by three women from Leeds College in England, who are asking that Victoria’s Secret not use harmful language in their campaigns.  Victoria’s Secret is a very large company with a  lot of influence, and posting an ad that might have been alluding to inclusivity or body-love seems to say the wrong thing.     A successful campaign has been launched to halt Julien Blanc's international visas and effectively prohibit him from giving seminars that promote violence against women. On Thursday, he was successfully kicked out of Australia following the internet campaign #takedownjulienblanc. Today, attention has shifted toward Canada and the UK. Just two months ago, the self-proclaimed pick-up artist Blanc posted an offensive video about what white men have the privilege of doing in Tokyo (by the way—no woman gave him permission nor did they appreciate the approach in the slightest).
