You may have never heard of her, but the pirates of the 1800’s sure did. Chang Shih, a.k.a. the most badass swashbuckler the world has ever seen, was in charge of 80,000 sailors on 1,500 ships. Those numbers make Blackbeard’s work look like child’s play. Chang’s legacy began when she married Zheng Yi in 1801. Unlike others, she actively helped her husband in operating The Red Flag Fleet, South China Sea’s force to reckon with. When Zheng passed away six years later, Chang took control of the fleet. In news that will shock exactly no one, a newly revealed deposition details Bill Cosby’s abuses of his power in manipulating and attacking women. How can we prove gender inequality really exists? By playing Halo 3, of course. Jeff Kuznekoff, an assistant professor at Miami University, and Michael Kasumovic, an evolutionary biologist for UNSW Australia, teamed up to conduct a study measuring bullying and gender. In order to accurately get the information they wanted, the popular first-person shooter game, Halo 3, was used. If you are unfamiliar with the game, the process is simple: players from around the world can log onto a “live” account to play as a team against other teams. Read More
On June 17, 2015, Raul Labrador – Idaho’s 1st district representative – introduced the H.R. 2802. The bill specifies protection against any discrimination of a person who “believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.” The First Amendment Defense Act "protects" the religious freedoms of employers, meaning they could fire unmarried pregnant women or LGBT employees. On July 10, Sandra Bland, driving to a new job at a Texas university, was pulled over for failing to use her blinker when changing lanes. The Root reports: “Police claim that during the stop she became combative, was thrown to the ground, arrested and charged with ‘assault on a public servant.’” On July 13, she was found dead in her jail cell. Police deemed it “self-inflicted asphyxiation,” and a coroner ruled it a suicide. However, those close to Bland, and the black activist community at large, are suspicious of these claims. Read More
Last night, Caitlyn Jenner gave an inspiring speech as she accepted the ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award. She told the audience that transgender people “deserve your respect” (just as everyone deserves your respect, regardless of their identity, but apparently some of us skipped Pre-K). Today, young trans people not only are already trying to navigate being a teenager, but are also “coming to terms with being transgender. Read More

Now this is impressive: Doris Long just became the world’s oldest abseiler, or person who descends very high vertical structures on ropes. She took up the sport at 85, and Sunday, the 101-year-old beat her own record as the world's oldest abseiler when she once again lowered herself down 328 feet of Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower in the United Kingdom.   Not only did she break an already impressive record, but Long’s feat helped raise $122,305 for Rowans Hospice. This was her sixteenth time doing the abseiling for hospice. Read More
