In the biggest "Wait...what?" of the past 15 minutes, the rapper 2 Chainz has written a cookbook oh-so-cleverly titled #MEAL TIME. The cookbook pairs hearty southern-style dishes with your favorite 2 Chainz songs. I know, it doesn't really make sense...but it looks TASTY!!! Normally, I would be ranting about the absurdity of a book instructing me to "Put on my Versace apron" as the first step to making Teriyaki Salmon, but look at this picture: YUM. Now, under the pretense of irony, I will probably read the cookbook (and enjoy it way too much). Read More
In the summer of 2011, Kristin Lajeunesse left her nine to five job, sold or donated most of her personal belongings, ended a long-term relationship, purchased and renovated a sports van, and hit the road on a quest to dine at and document every vegan restaurant in America on her blog Will Travel For Vegan Food. Now, 1 book deal, 48 states, 500+ vegan eateries, and over 35,000 miles later, Lajeunesse’s life-changing journey is finally coming to an end. And to celebrate this milestone, she’s hosting a fundraising party in N.Y.C. Read More
Huzzah! It’s an article about breastfeeding that doesn’t include shaming, ridicule, or a nursing mom being kicked off Facebook!Jackie Johnson-Smith had a very encouraging experience whilst dining out with her family: someone paid part of their tab. Because she was breastfeeding. When Johnson-Smith’s husband received the receipt for their meal, this lovely note was written on it:   “I bought one of your pizzas…please thank your wife for breastfeeding!” The good Samaritan? Their waitress, Bodi Kinney. Read More
You can't unsee it. Usually if you crack a rock open, you just find more rock. But apparently some rock innards are a bit more barfy. The "Pyura chilensis" is a mysterious sea creature delightfully known as "period rock" to those who handle it. It’s found on the coasts of Chile and Peru, and it’s pretty boring on the surface: it looks like a rock, feels like a rock, and acts like a rock. It sits on top of other rocks and never, ever moves. I LOVE cereal—especially in the summer, when I’d rather chew glass than turn on a stove. But when cruising the aisles of my supermarket, it’s rare that I can actually find a brand that I want to eat. Often there’s something pesky in each ingredients list that keeps me from closing the deal (like gluten, added sugar, animal products, or icky chemical preservatives) and I’m left with nothing to pack my bowl.  That’s why I was so psyched to find this quick and easy recipe for Muesli in The China Study Cookbook by Leanne Campbell, PhD.   As much as I support mamas helping mamas and I’m 200% for breastfeeding, I just can’t find it in me to understand these lengths that women go to for vegan breast milk. Alicia Silverstone has used her blog, The Kind Life, to set up Kind Mama Milk Share for vegan moms to connect and donate breast milk. Personally I think its great that women will drive and ship breast milk from far and wide to help other women in need. I really do. And I also understand that women may want to implement a specific diet regime for themselves to follow while breastfeeding. Read More
This is gross on way too many levels. The German supermarket chain Esko is selling gendered sausages. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN. Apparently the men’s sausages are made to be "hearty” and “strongly-spiced," while the lady meat is "lean," with “high-quality vegetables” and a “delicate sheep casing.” They’re versions of the same company’s product, yet they have different ingredients, different prices, and very different packaging. Oh baby. Today in products you didn’t ask for, a specialty lollipop company called Lollyphile has “candified” the unique flavor of breast milk into wee lollies. You might be thinking, ‘hey – I have all my teeth and no longer wear diapers - this ain’t for me!’ But stop right there! Step one for enjoying these suckers is to turn off your brain. “Any company can make up nostalgic flavors,” says Jason Darling, the company’s owner. Read More
