Musicians for Equal Opportunities for Women (MEOW) is celebrating the achievements of women in music with a three-day fiesta in Austin, TX.
Legendary rock goddess Suzi Quatro will be honored with the Woman of Valor Award at MEOW Con's kickoff banquet on Friday; she'll also perform a set, backed by her sister Patti Quatro and Tony Scalzo of Fastball. Yes. This five-minute gem of a video gets everything right. Released in 1997, the group is made up of Lili, Tahmineh and Sepideh - three Iranian-American ladies who reside in California but sing in Farsi. Apparently, the group is the first all-women Iranian band. The single title "Khorshid Khanoom" means Lady Sun in Farsi, and the video reflects the ladies' Earth Mother sensibility. With different colored hair pieces representing three of the four elements (air, fire and earth) the video shares aesthetic sentiments with the 1987 Cher vehicle, the Witches of Eastwick. Read More

As an obsessive SNL watching kid, I first noticed them- somewhere between the lead singer and the band were the backup singers. Almost always, there were three, in identical black dresses. One had an afro, and they stood to the side- they obviously weren't the lead singers, they didn't play instruments, and they certainly weren't in the band. Read More

If you like women, rock, and women in rock (which…let’s face it, who doesn’t?), then you should probably make it a point to head to Le Poisson Rouge on Bleecker on August 18th. Why? Because they are presenting an NYC Women in Rock show, duh.
Doors are at 6:30, show’s at 7. Get there fast for your $12 tickets; seems that this thing could fill up and there’s only so much room!
