What is a witch? The term has morphed over time from wise woman and priestess to practitioner of the dark arts and enemy of Christianity. The witches of fairy tales embodied undesirable characteristics of womanhood like jealousy, ugliness, independence, and old age. We cannot help but notice the similar criteria for killing women in the witch trials of the Middle Ages and beyond. This Sunday, June 21, is the summer solstice, the longest stretch of daylight all year for those of us in the Northern hemisphere. Regardless of if you’re a practicing pagan or just pumped about the start of summer, the solstice is the perfect day to celebrate warmth, transition, and renewal.
