We’re down to the negatives here in the Northeast, barely hoping to break freezing this week. It’s a level of cold that can’t be ignored, especially when it comes to outfit selection. So how do we go out into the world when we can barely get out of our beds? Lots and lots of layers. To make your winter days bearable, we rounded up eight of the warmest and cutest pairs of long underwear we know of. We fully recommend wearing these under plenty of other comfy clothing, whether you’re venturing outside, or just cuddling up in your apartment. Read More

Punxsutawney Phil, the asshole he is, told us this week that we're going to be enduring six more weeks of winter. Great, you think, as you empty the slush that somehow made its way inside your boots. If only we could all just crawl back into the ground and sleep for a month and a half. Groundhog jerk.
So yes, you're stuck in your winter wardrobe for what looks like the foreseeable future. Read More

Underwear for the holidays? Oh boy, not again! But wait... this Kmart and Joe Boxer commercial actually makes underwear seem festive. Tossing out the familiar and overtly sexualized David Beckham-esque boxer aesthetic, the company opts for a parody of that sexualization, and I gotta say, this version is way more in the fun, magical and childlike vein of true holiday cheer. As Thanksgiving approaches, it is difficult not to get wrapped up (badabing!) in preparations and endless phone calls with the folks. Or if you’re like many of my friends in NYC, you might be preoccupied with finding a way to make the Holidays special even though you will be working like a champ. Cheezy as it sounds, half of the fun of the holiday spirit is helping others. Whether you are hosting a traditional turkey fest for your close friends or knitting a scarf for mom, it feels awesome to care for someone else. Read More

It’s easy to pass by puffy outerwear in the post-holiday mess that is retail stores these days, deeming it tacky or unflattering. I’ll admit that I’m still not a huge fan of the bubble jacket. But next time you see a marshmallow-y vest, I challenge you to try it on and still believe it’s not worth the warmth. If you find the right one, puffer vests can be cute AND incredibly comfy. I encourage the oversized puffer vest, like the one seen in this badass shoot by Naomi Shon. Read More

Vaute Couture, the super stylish coat maker, has unveiled its new coats for this winter: a collection of vegan and fair trade coats that are made of eco-friendly and sometimes recycled materials. Even better, they're made in the U.S.A. Founder Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart created Vaute in 2008 in order to offer coats that were warm enough for harsh winters without containing any animal products or compromising on aesthetics. Read More

When my friends from high school moved to the East Coast for college, they were most horrified by winter. "Why did people settle there?" My friend once asked when discussing New York. "It's uninhabitable!"
It's not that my hometown, San Francisco, is the tropical paradise people assume of a California locale. Perpetually autumn-temperature, SF experiences a winter rainy season and brief Indian summer and lots of low-lying fog. Read More
