Just when we thought we wouldn’t hear much more on the subject of rape from GOP lawmakers, one West Virginia delegate decided to chime in. How, do you ask? By essentially insinuating that rape is beautiful because a child can result from it.
In a public hearing last Thursday, Brian Kurbaca (R) stated that, “obviously rape is awful... what’s beautiful is the child that could come from this.”
The West Virginia House of Delegates was trying to ... Read More

Last summer, when Republican candidate Todd Akin was quoted saying, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” he was, thankfully enough, met with incredulous public outrage. (Update: he regrets his foolish words!) However – as abhorrent as Akin’s comments are – they do reveal society’s general misunderstanding of how the human body, the brain, sexual assault, and ... Here we go again. Another republican has put his foot in his mouth about what qualifies as rape. Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia, while trying to explain his colleagues’ beliefs about rape, came out sounding just as ignorant and incoherent as the others.
At a recent chamber of commerce breakfast, Gingrey, not just a congressman but the co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus, tried explaining fellow republican Todd Akin’s remarks about legitimate versus ... Read More

Trigger Warning: This post contains a description of sexual assault that may potentially be triggering for survivors of assault.
Is it rape if you don’t put up a fight? Well, according to Orange County judge Derek G. Johnson, no, not really. To be clear, he believes that if a woman doesn’t put up a fight when attacked, then technically, yes, it is rape, but not “a real, live criminal case.”Let me explain. Back in 2008 Judge ... Read More

The election is over, and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate! Besides the re-election of President Barack Obama and “America’s happy warrior” Vice President Joe Biden, this election saw the legalization of gay marriage in Maine and Maryland, the legalization of marijuana in Washington and Colorado, and more women elected to the Senate than ever before. I hope you spent last night cheering and hugging random strangers in a bar, but ... Read More

Remember when Todd Akin, the Republican representative currently vying for a seat on the Missouri Senate, made his now-infamous rape gaffe earlier this month? Well, it looks like angry white men across the country just can't stop committing political suicide by drowning in Akin’s word vomit.
From “legitimate rape” to “forcible rape” and everything in between, here are five of the worst rape-related comments lawmakers made this month. ... Read More

I know we’re all sick of hearing Todd Akin’s name, but I think you might not mind this latest bit of news about him. The Renegade Raging Grannies have brought us many saucy, awareness-raising songs about corruption and stupidity in the government. Their commentary on issues from war, to offshore drilling, to the rights of transgendered individuals (and lots more topics) makes me giddy with excitement. These are truly badass ladies who tell it like it ... Read More

There’s been a lot of talk about rape and resulting pregnancies recently, thanks to Todd Akin’s awful and dangerously inaccurate remarks. Shauna Prewitt, the Chicago lawyer who had her story of rape and subsequent pregnancy published by CNN, discovered some pretty terrifying news while researching. According to RH Reality Check, 32,000 women become pregnant from rape each year. 32,000 women whose bodies were unable to “shut that ... Read More

It looked for a minute there like Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) had gone so far into the deep end of offensive ignorance that the left and right could come together in outrage. But then, of course, Twitter brought to light the sad truth that not everyone was flabbergasted when the Senate nominee claimed that it's impossible for women to get pregnant from "legitimate rape" (whatever that means).
Thankfully, many of the #IStandWithAkin tweets were sarcastic:
But some ... Read More

Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, a six-term member of Congress, wowed us on Sunday with his deep knowledge of the female body. In an effort to explain his stance on abortion, the Republican nominee graced us with a biology lesson on women’s reproductive organs. While I usually don’t look to politicians for my lessons on the birds and the bees, I’m so glad that I did this time, because now I know that my uterus has the power to ... Read More
