Today, as the state of Texas wakes up, its citizens may find more than 1/3 of its abortion clinics suddenly shut down. The worst part is, this ridiculous new measure wasn't even supposed to happen in the first place. Earlier this week, the Texas law that would potentially close many of the state's aforementioned abortion clinics was nixed by a federal judge. Now, just four days later, the decision has been reversed.  According to the New York Times' report, ... Read More
Disenfranchise: verb. to deprive of a legal right, or of some privilege or immunity; especially : to deprive of the right to vote.  The Texas GOP is putting that word to use in the sneakiest way possible: starting November 5th, a voter must show identification with his or her most current, legally recognized name. I say his or her...but when was the last time a "he" you know had a name different from as it reads on his birth certificate? Rather, this new law ... Read More
It looks like Wendy Davis, the Texas State Senator who made headlines back in June for her 11 hour filibuster of a bill that would expand abortion restrictions, is just getting started. According to Politico, Davis has been telling Democrats that she plans to run for governor in 2014. Although no official announcement has been made by Davis herself, the senator tweeted a fundraising request in anticipation of “something big” to be announced next week, ... Read More
Hornet Signs, a Waco Texas based printing company, should probably start looking for a new advertising director. As a promotion for their products, the company printed a decal that featured a woman, bound and tied, curled up in the bed of a pick up truck. The image of a blonde woman in jeans, her hands bound and tied, hair obscuring her face, was placed on the back of a Hornet employee’s pick up truck to showcase how realistic the company’s signs look. ... A Waco, Texas pastor named A.J. Aamir recently banned the wearing of hair weaves by staff in his church. He justified his decision by saying that "black women are getting weaves, trying to be something and someone they are not." Um, hello controversy. Aamir, who grew up in an Islamic household, suggests with this statement that hair weaves project a false image of the woman wearing them, and that they should therefore be prohibited in the sacred place. The pastor ... Read More
If you’re looking for good (well, good-ish) news for women in Texas, here’s something. Thanks to an 11 million dollar budget appropriation for the Texas Department of Public Safety, thousands of untested rape kits can finally be analyzed  Which is cool, for a second, until you do a double-take on that line: thousands of untested rape kits. So this triumph is sort of marred by the fact that there was a severe backlog for so many years. The ... Read More
I don’t know when it will ever get through peoples heads- just because you make something illegal doesn’t mean that people will stop doing it, nor does it even begin to solve the problem. Texas, the reality is that abortions happen with or without legality and when you pass a bill that closes all but 5 abortion clinics, the reality of the situation doesn’t change. The result is more women endangering their lives and psychological stability by finding ways ... Read More
We were laughing our asses off at the BUST 20th Anniversary Extravaganza while these two took over the stage. Now the hilarious duo has once again proved their comedic genius with a response to the anti-abortion legislation in Texas. Comedian David Cross and actress/poet Amber Tamblyn created the perfect parody of the newest doctor - the "Gynotician." In a seemingly typical  gyno checkup, a patient (Amb Tamb) comes in to see her doctor to get birth ... Read More
After pads and tampons were confiscated last week during an anti-abortion law hearing, I had enough sense to believe people were going to go bat-shit crazy over this latest Texas travesty. They did. But after MSNBC anchor Melissa Harris-Perry donned a pair of tampon earrings this weekend to prove a point, it’s no wonder we’re still sitting here, fighting the same damn fight over our own bodies. “What a nasty skank.” “The Left are ... If I slammed my head against the desk every time I heard something idiotic happened this weekend, the BUST office would be covered with dents. At the anti-abortion law hearing at the Texas Senate Chamber this Friday, feminine hygiene products were confiscated, for fear that they would be "thrown at Senators." ... Yeah, that's right, guys. Tampons are a real issue in this country. How many people have to die from tampons before we need to pass tampon-banning ... Read More
