Most everybody enjoys a bit of sweetness in their beverages, but who wants to guzzle saccharine-filled, artificial drinks all day? Instead, try making your own fruit syrups; then keep them on hand to add a quick hit of flavor and a hint of sweetness to a glass of seltzer or a cocktail. These all-natural syrups contain nothing but honey, fruit, herbs, and spices, and they’re the perfect way to use the in-season fruit you got from your latest CSA share. Aside from drinks, you can stir them into smoothies and yogurt, or drizzle them on shaved ice or ice cream. Read More

Dirty Dancing Style Guide

BY Caelan in Style

Dirty Dancing didn’t only make household names out of Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze (R.I.P.) but it was also an iconic teen love story that made water dancing, Keds and summer camp seem cool. This movie was iconic not only in the mom-jeans hall of fame, but it also became essential when talking about 80’s fashion, so today I’m bringing baby out of the wardrobe corner and into 2014. So without further ado, here's how to incorporate 80’s fashion into your wardrobe without looking like the lady who sells Christmas sweaters on QVC or Sally Jesse Raphael. Read More
The Casket Girls, a three-piece from Georgia, is one of the very few bands with a creation story as dreamlike as its music. With a sound that’s equal parts soulful and grungy, dreamy and haunting, the Casket Girls really hold their own in the realm of what their record label accurately dubs “eerie-pop." They aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a summer soundtrack, but Strange Majik is here to change that. Read More

This July they are sharing the love and appreciating their customers through special deals, free stuff, and fun events happening during their big summer sale. Read More
Skorts were my best friend as a kid, especially during the summer months.  The skirts on the outside were short enough to keep me cool and nice enough to wear to a friend’s birthday party, while the built-in shorts underneath allowed for unrestricted jungle-gym antics without having to worry about flashing the entire school. With the serious July heat setting in, I’m finding myself reminiscing about playground days, popsicles and the pure genius that is the skirt-shorts hybrid. Read More
It’s music festival season, and while you might have already braved the Porta Potties at some of the better-known U.S. events, there’s one gem that might’ve escaped your attention. The Festival d’éte de Quebec (the Quebec Summer Festival, for those of you who didn’t show up to high school French class) is happening as we speak in Canada, that health-insurance-having, glorious area north of Vermont. I attended the first few days of the festival, which runs from July 3 to July 13 this year, and caught a glimpse of some seriously impressive acts. Read More
There’s a brand-new building going up in my neighborhood, about a block from my subway stop. I’m not even going to bother explaining what that means. If you're a woman, you know the deal. As I approach, I feel my shoulders rounding forward, my gait shortening and shuffling. My eyes are Super-Glued to the sidewalk. I want to hide, but I can’t get to the subway unless I go down this particular block, and here they are, and here comes the low whistle and: “Why you walking so fast, honey?” “Juicy, juicy thighs.
