In this season of giving, I’d like to take the time to talk about that piece of ourselves which is sometimes the hardest to give: our time. It’s no secret that volunteering is a beneficial activity for anyone, both mentally and physically. Not to mention the fact that there are always others who will benefit from you donating some of your time.
I have only recently made volunteering a part of my routine. After graduating college and moving to New York, ... Read More
We are super psyched for one of our favorite feminist-graphic-artist-memoirists, Alison Bechdel, who, we just found out, is a 2014 MacArthur Fellow. That means that Bechdel now has $625,000 to use for snacks while writing and drawing about the complexities of queer lifestyles and histories. We look forward to seeing what kind of creativity that amount of snacks can produce. If I only had that much money for cashews...
Each year, based on a kind of mysterious ... Read More

Amy Poehler's Smart Girls at the Party started off as a web series and is now a whole online community. They have a website, a Facebook page, and a Tumblr. Smart Girls encourages young women to be active in their communities and make a difference in the world. It's an incredible organization, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to get to talk to one of its founders, Meredith Walker.

How many states do you know? How about capitals? How about global capitals? Do you know what SCUBA stands for without sprinting to Google? This is not a 5th grade drill to shame you - it's to emphasize how smart these little geniuses are. After coming across a video of Anala Beevers, a Mensa Member at age 4, with an IQ in the top 1% of the human population, I was a little curious about other mini Mensa members.
Apparently, being young and very ... Read More

We have some very good news this week. Following in the footsteps of prolific funny women like Chelsea Handler, Amy Sedaris, and Tina Fey, Amy Poehler is writing a book. Yes, you heard that right—Amy Poehler is writing a book! Well, it’s about damn time!
According to the AP, the as-of-now untitled book will be out in 2014, and will be published by It Books, a pop culture imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.
It is “inspired in ... Read More
Let’s take a collective “holy shit” moment and appreciate the fact that a twelve-year-old has recently managed to score a full two points higher on the IQ test than both Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Yeah, you read that right- a twelve-year-old is more of a genius than the two most well known brilliant dudes in existence EVER.
This little genius is a girl (woo!) from the UK named Olivia Manning. Her IQ score of 162 has landed her the label ... Read More
