"There will never be a n***** in SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me." A lynching song to the melody of “If Your Happy and You Know It.” That was the chant sung by a group of fraternity boys from the Oklahoma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Fraternities have been rightfully under fire for their part in playing into sexist, racist, and homophobic practices that, while not sanctioned, are undoubtedly part of the long history of institutional issues on campuses. While many of us were celebrating Valentine’s Day with roses, chocolates, and glasses of wine, there was a different kind of celebration going on—one that focused on self-love and what it means to be a survivor. The hashtag #SurvivorLoveLetter took hold on Tumblr that day and is a powerful representation of those who have survived sexual violence. Launched by the co-founder of the sex education company imMEDIAte Justice, Tani Ikeda, this platform became a place to publicly declare “self-love or honor a survivor in your life. Read More
In a tragic reminder of the many ways marginalized women suffer every day, a homeless woman in Ohio reported that she walked eight miles to court at least half a dozen times in the past year to make sure her rapist, Paul E. Hubert, didn’t go free. Hubert claimed he paid her to have sex with him, but the victim’s injuries (he had repeatedly hit her head prior to assaulting her) indicated that it was in fact rape. After being asked about her song "Swine" on the Howard Stern Show, Lady Gaga, the queen of all things strange and beautiful, claimed a record producer raped her when she was just nineteen years old. "Swine," a song associated with the infamous bull riding and vomiting during Gaga's 2014 SXSW performance, was inspired by the strife she felt years after feeling demoralized.  During the interview Lady Gaga said, "You could never, ever degrade [me] as much as I could degrade myself, and look how beautiful it is when I do. You've probably been seeing Bill Cosby's name popping up everywhere recently. Two years ago, producer Amy Ziering and director Kirby Dick released an unflinching documentary that exposed a culture of sexual violence and rape in the US military and the institutional bureaucracy that was either designed or manipulated to ignore, mishandle, and ostracize those who challenged that culture.   Now, the filmmakers have turned to another “invisible war" — sexual violence and rape on the college campus and the institutional bureaucracy that is either designed or manipulated to ignore, mishandle, and ostracize those who challenge that culture. The YouTube community is at a loss with recent accusations of sexual assault directed towards popular “prankster,” Sam Pepper. This British vlogger has over 2 million subscribers on YouTube and over 1.1 million followers on Twitter. A majority of his fans are young women.  Personally, I’m shocked that he was able to gain a fan base on YouTube, considering his prank videos that involve violating women. His most recent video, which promoted the allegations from victims, was a video, “Fake Hand Ass Pinch Prank. Read More
This month, “Be That Guy,” a behavioral marketing campaign that stresses sex without consent is sexual assault, in partnership with the global human rights organization, Breakthrough, launched a Green Bay clip opposing violence against women that will run throughout the NFL season. It confronts the weird gender roles and issues that men face everyday, namely to confront men who are harassing women and tell them to knock it off! We all know being a bystander and letting harassment happen can and often will perpetuate further violence towards women. Read More
It seems like a given that a victim of sexual assault should never, ever have to pay for the tests and treatments that attempt to lessen the horror of her experience. Apparently, that is not the case in several states around the country, most noticeably in Louisiana. Recent victims who entered hospitals, like Interim LSU which recently became part of the private entity Louisiana Children's Medical Center, have received bills upwards of $2,000, sometimes months after their visit.
