If you were ever categorized as “basic” by the Internet, perhaps you are lamenting the loss of pumpkin in your diet this fall as you construct a less PSL-dependent existence. Whatever, HATERS GONNA HATE. The lack-o’-jack-o’-lantern food is a shame given the pulpy nutrients inside: one cup of cooked, mashed pumpkin has 245% of your daily vitamin A and 16% of your daily potassium (not that you were getting that in your latte). Don’t ... Read More
Gumbo is a New Orleans treat that is hard to match. Due to National Gumbo Day approaching fast (yes, it's a thing!), this Sunday, October 12 to be exact, I have complied some recipes to try if you can't make it to the soulful NOLA. Before you begin, know that there are two types of Gumbo, and that it is a Creole dish, not a Cajun one. Type one is based on okra the African vegetable, and two, is thickened with gumbo file, which is powdered sassafras leaves, ... Read More

There is no certification required for becoming a Youtube “beauty guru.” It’s fine when young beauty aficionados share tips on clothing, confidence and how to apply makeup, but they embark on shaky territory when they start pretending to be dermatologists. Whether it’s an urban myth like using toothpaste as a spot treatment, or rubbing half a lemon covered in sugar directly on your face, don’t trust advice from anyone who ... Read More
Unicorns, rainbows and cookies, oh my! But seriously, GET IN MY BELLY. I do not care how much food dye you require— you are perfect. Yes, I do talk to all of my cookies… Maybe I spent too much time discussing My Little Pony with my little campers, but I am convinced that “friendship is magic” and anything rainbow and unicorn-themed should be praised. YouTuber Rosanna Pansino could be a Disney Princess. Seriously, watch her ‘Nerdy ... Read More
Maybe it's the end of a grueling work-day, if you have a work-day. If you're on the East Coast, there's a sporting chance you'll be caught in a tepid drizzle-storm the next time you leave a building. Hey, maybe there's nothing in the fridge! Maybe you've got to invoice or read the ever-traumatic newspaper or do something else taxing with your evening hours, when all you really want to do is curl up in the deepest part of the deepest couch and ignore all the phone ... Because Sally McKenney is a genius, and everything, and I DO mean everything is delicious, and as far as I’ve tried, all the recipes leave nothing to be desired. As a ... Read More

Last year, when the farmer's market was looking sad with nothing but kale and onions and potatoes, I bought a sugar pumpkin, just 'cause it looked so cute. When I got it home I wasn't quite sure what I'd do with it. Unlike Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins, which really aren't the most delicious for cooking and eating, sugar pumpkins are much smaller, more round than squat, and they have flesh that is firmer, and less stringy and watery, than their larger sisters. That ... Read More
