Trigger Warning: This post discusses the sexual assault of a minor.
In a new segment called “This Sucks,” BUST presents this horrific news story, hot off the press:
A Massachusetts minor was only 14 when 20-year-old Jamie Melendez raped and impregnated her. As if that weren’t horrific enough, it turns out that Melendez has sued for visitation rights with the child, rights which would force the victim into a 16-year relationship with her attacker.
Astonishingly, he offered to drop his contest for paternal rights if his $110 weekly child support payments were waived. Read More

So this triumph is sort of marred by the fact that there was a severe backlog for so many years. The guestimate is somewhere between 16,000 and 20,000 untested rape kits. Read More

There are few phrases in the English language more abhorrent, more insidious, more absolutely goddamn infuriating than these five words: They were asking for it.
Rape is never, ever, the victim’s fault. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks so – as everyone from assholes on social media to tennis stars to cops play into rape culture, often questioning the victim while giving the benefit of the doubt to the perpetrator.
When politicians like Todd Akin utter the words “legitimate rape,” he is operating on an idea that rape exists in 50 shades of gradations. Read More
