Having a vagina in tow on this journey called life can mean that you pay quite a bit more for day-to-day living, no matter the country you live in. With tampon taxes and pay gaps making national news, Buddy Loans, a British loan company, added up just how much more money it costs to be a vagina owner. Unsurprisingly, many of the things that cost women in the U.K. extra transfer pretty indiscriminately to the women in the States. Let’s do the math: 1. Read More
Over 100 women are suing Endo Pharmaceuticals and blaming the company for the negligent packaging that resulted in their unwanted pregnancies. For those unfamiliar with how the pill works, here’s a quick review: you take one pill a day for three weeks, and during the week of your period, you take one placebo pill per day as well. Et voila, no pregnancy. Oops! Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Endo, incorrectly packaged their pill packs so that women took their placebo pill when they should have been taking the active pills that prevent pregnancies. Earlier this week, local Portland hero and overall badass Mary Numair cleared out a protest at her local Planned Parenthood by enthusiastically chanting, “yeast infection” over and over until the protestors left.  In an interview with Buzzfeed, Numair, who supports Planned Parenthood – especially after they helped her with her UTIs, yeast infection, and contraception – said that, “Planned Parenthood is vital resource for so many people.   Washington Post social change reporter Sandhya Somashekhar wants to make sweet, sweet love to antichoice "activist" David Daleiden - you know, the guy behind the "Planned Parenthood sells baby body parts" video. At least that was my biggest takeaway from her recent profile of him. Somashekhar begins with the laziest attempt at being impartial: “Daleiden, 26, is the antiabortion activist who masterminded the recent undercover campaign aimed at proving that Planned Parenthood illegally sells what he calls aborted ‘baby body parts. “I stand with Planned Parenthood because…Donald Trump,” Stachyann Chin shouted into the mic yesterday to the laughter and cheers of a passionate crowd gathered to stand in solidarity with Planned Parenthood. Foley Square, Manhattan was just one of the rallies taking place all over the country yesterday to protest the house vote to defund Planned Parenthood through blocking Medicaid reimbursement and withdrawing Title Ten Family Planning Program funds. What would our country look like without Planned Parenthood? Well, considering that Planned Parenthood provides care for 2. Read More
. New York City supporters of Planned Parenthood swarmed Foley Square on Sept. 29, at the #PinkOut rally. Along with the chance to participate in chants like "Show me what democracy looks like! THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE," and listen to several speakers, the event gave us the chance to chat with the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood NYC, Joan Mailn, about what government defunding of the organization would look like, and how you can help to stand with PP.  What would the United States without Planned Parenthood look like? Well, it would be 2. Read More
Last week, women around the world bravely shared their abortion stories as #ShoutYourAbortion trended on Twitter. The movement got started when Amelia Bonow shared her abortion story on Facebook after learning of the House of Representative’s vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Lindy West took Amelia’s story to Twitter with the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion, shared her own abortion story, and with the help of a few “co-conspirators” including Kimberly Morrison, a viral hashtag was born. But #ShoutYourAbortion didn’t stop there. Read More
The day after the House of Representatives voted to defund Planned Parenthood, Seattle-based writer Amelia Bonow logged onto Facebook and began a post. “Hey guys!” she began. “Like a year ago I had an abortion at the Planned Parenthood on Madison Ave...."     Writer and activist Lindy West shared Amelia’s story on Twitter along with the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion, and, with the help of another "co-conspirator" Kimberly Morrison, a viral movement was born. Seriously guys? Reproductive healthcare is not a political bargaining chip, it’s a necessity for everyone (yes men too). Planned Parenthood makes this necessity a reality for people who would otherwise not be able to afford these services.  It goes without saying that defunding Planned Parenthood would be a devastating step backwards for our country, but I’ll say it anyway, since my faith in humanity is still smarting from Friday.
