The vast majority of women, and some men, experience street harassment — according to Hollaback, 80 to 99% of women experience street harassment at some point in their lives. Street harassment takes the form of vulgar gestures, sexually explicit comments, whistling, following, kissing noises, groping, masturbation….the list goes on. I’ve had most of these happen to me — from the man who followed me out of the subway while masturbating, to the whistling and kissing noises that sometimes follow me when I’m out at night. Read More
There’s always that one friend in the group who has the hangout house. Sophomore clothing designer, Chrissie Miller’s is known as Club Chrissie.  In the beginning of October, Chrissie turned her clubhouse into the site for her new Youtube web series under the same byline. Artist and designer Mike Perry opted to celebrate the release of his monograph Wondering Around Wandering in a non-traditional way: instead of a standard launch party, Perry created a pop-up exhibition of the same name in his Brooklyn neighborhood. The warehouse-turned-gallery eventually gained a new use as a community art space, playing host to pumpkin-painting parties, school groups, art workshops, and performances. As with all good things, Wondering Around Wandering’s three-month residency is coming to a close…and you—yes, you!—are invited to come celebrate. Read More
It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy started making her way up the Northeast, and despite the valiant efforts of police, firefighters, and good old-fashioned volunteers, there is an unbelievable amount of clean-up and reconstruction that needs to be done. This short film by fashion photographer and director Poppy de Villeneuve gives a sobering view of conditions in the Rockaways, a beach community in Queens (and one of my favorite places in New York): There are so many neighborhoods that need our help, and sadly, so many impediments to getting there.   “I’m not a performer, I’m a pervert,” says Dixie De La Tour, the host and curator of cultural phenomenon Bawdy Storytelling. Called “The Moth for Pervs” by LA Weekly, Bawdy Storytelling is all about people sharing their best, worst, most unusual, or most meaningful sexual experiences—all in 10 minutes or less. At a recent Bawdy Storytelling event at Brooklyn’s Galapagos Art Space, De La Tour sat at a little table on the front corner of the stage, her shoulders peeking out of a black ’50s-style dress.   For the third day in a row, BUST offices are closed, thanks to Hurricane Sandy. We’re hoping our fellow East Coasters are safe and sound, with electricity and a long Netflix queue to keep them warm and occupied. I’m lucky enough to have power, and I’ve spent my hurricane days catching up on Mad Men and making cinnamon pancakes. However, many people on the East Coast are less fortunate. Whether you’re in a hard-hit city like New York or far away, high and dry, there are things you can do to help. Read More
