It seems like the discussion surrounding the Miley Cyrus phenomenon and her use of little people at the VMAs has involved (mostly white) women of average height. While that’s valid and can be helpful, I can’t help but wonder why we’re not hearing from little people. An average sized person cannot pretend to understand cultural prejudices and representations of little people without at least consulting an informed source for whom this issue is personal.    Hollis Jane is an actress who also happens to be a little person.   Sinead O’ Connor, the mother of controversy who once tore up a picture of John Paul II, had a few things to say to Miley Cyrus this week. By "a few things," I mean Sinead dropped massive wisdom bombs on the twerking pop star.    Miley cites Sinead O'Connor as her influence for the “Wrecking Ball” video in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, and Sinead is not happy.   There has been a lot of talk about Miley Cyrus lately, and not surprisingly, a lot of it centers around her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. This kind of talk is concerning; it’s as if the American public has chosen to express their disapproval of Miley’s sexual expression by implying that Billy Ray must be appalled. The public is crying, “That’s not my little girl.” And the thing is that she isn’t our little girl at all; she is a woman growing up and finding out who she is and how she wants to express that. We get loads of press releases here at BUST— sometimes about things that are really relevant to us and our readers, and sometimes, well, sometimes not. And the press release we received yesterday was just wrong in a thousand million ways. So wrong, in fact, that just describing it wouldn't be enough. Instead, we wanted to share the entire release with you. Granted, sharing it with you is exactly what the publicist was hoping for, but somehow we don't think this release will have the intended effect.  Read on, if you dare. Read More
AHHHH I’M LIZZING! This is probably the greatest lady news I’ve received all day! The truly special, talented, and hilariously wonderful Tina Fey will be returning home to NBC by hosting Saturday Night Live’s 39th Season Premiere. This will be…wait for it…Tina’s FOURTH time hosting the show she got her start from. On September 28th, Arcade Fire will also join Tina, as SNL’s musical guest. Read More
I know, I know, we’re all sick of talking about Miley Cyrus. Regardless of the obvious cultural appropriation and insensitivity she displayed at the VMA’s with her twerk debacle, the debate on whether or not her overt sexuality is empowering (or degrading) continues.  Today, she released her new video for her song “Wrecking Ball.” In the song, she describes the heartbreak and loss that can come with truly falling in love with someone who might not reciprocate the feeling: “Don’t you ever say I just walked away/ I will always want you.     This weekend, I got caught in the crossfire of yet another Miley Cyrus twerking debate, and I realized that race is a feminist issue now as much as it ever was. For decades (centuries!), the fight against race and gender inequality have been intimately bound together, all the way from Ida B. Wells’s anti-lynching papers, which completely disrupted stereotypes applied to both black and white women, to the public outcry against the objectification of black women in Cyrus’s performances. Tragically, the media continues to over-sexualize African American women. Read More
At Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, Miley Cyrus took the stage and showed off her so-called twerking skills. For the past few days, the starlet’s performance has been getting A LOT of media attention. Some have complained that her performance was too sexy and scandalous, but others have addressed another issue—of Cyrus’ appropriation of black culture, and using African-American women as props. Ok Miley, we’ve had this discussion before. It needed to happen, all for good reason. Read More
Bounce queen and BUSTie Big Freedia is probably the foremost authority we have on twerking, and she has a lot to say about Miley Cyrus. When BUST reached out to Big Freedia, she sent us an official statement on the Miley Cyrus twerk-gate. She said, “Get me and Miley together so I could give her ass some lessons.” The New Orleans musician shared some insight on the current twerking craze, its origins in New Orleans’ bounce scene, and why Miley needs to be gently but firmly told to stop. Everybody, let’s stop with the slut-shaming. Miley's performance at the VMAs is upsetting, but not for the reasons you think. The furor and shock and vitriol strike me as the height of hypocrisy and sexism. Miley Cyrus is still America’s Sweetheart — the REAL America I like Miley Cyrus. There, I said it. I like her irreverence, her in-your-faceness, her lack of B.S and her honesty about what she likes and who she is. Read More
