Today is Women’s Equality Day, the anniversary of (pardon me, *white) women gaining the right to vote in 1920. We started in Seneca Falls, and now we’re here – 95 years later, fierce and feminist as ever. To celebrate, we’ve compiled fifteen "Suffrage Jams" paying homage not only to the activists who pushed for the 19th Amendment, but to the millions of badass women who have since enjoyed and exercised that right. There’s still room for progress, of course – when it comes to politics, women are a long way from getting fully even. Read More

Music is a very male-dominated industry, and when women do rise to prominence they are often pitted against and compared to each other, despite the fact that each queen is a unique snowflake and should be treated as such.
But once in a blue moon, all the stars align and three or more female powerhouses collaborate to create a club-banger that reminds the boys that these divas are not only fierce, but borderline superhuman when they work together. You better work, ladies. Read More

M.I.A.'s much-anticipated fourth studio album, Matangi, is set for release tomorrow, November 5th. But you don't have to wait another 24 hours to hear the new tracks--Matangi, in its entirety, is currently streaming on YouTube.
It's everything you would expect from M.I.A.--heavy beats, witty rhymes, references to political movements you have to look up on Wikipedia later, and last but not least: a serious dose of bad-ass-ery. The album, which she describes as more "spiritual" than her past work, is already drawing in positive reviews from all sides. Read More

Remember when M.I.A. tossed up her middle finger during her appearance at the 2012 SuperBowl? Yeah, it’s cool—I really don’t remember it either. Even the FCC never gave her any heat about it, and what do you know? The world is still fully functional and humans haven’t quite yet resorted to cannibalism.
As it turns out, not everyone is satisfied with the current state of affairs. It has recently come to light that the NFL began taking action against M.I.A. about a month after the incident occurred. Continuously, she’s been asked to pay a fine of $1. Read More

Okay, so I know that isn't technically a brand-new track (it's been out for a couple of weeks), but Santigold's new song "Big Mouth" is making me all kinds of curious about her forthcoming 2012 album. Santi White, aka Santigold, revealed that the highly-anticipated follow-up to her 2008 debut will be called Master of My Make-Believe; the Brooklyn-based artist told V Magazine, "I want it to be about creating your own reality. Longing for some more MIA shenanigans? Well, in that case, here you go! I present to you the new video for XXXO off her new album MAYA. Welcome to the ex-MySpacer's glittery HTML comment nightmare, kiddies. But seriously, it's all in good fun. I mean, I know she's a powerful lady, but I wonder if she's powerful enough to finally sink that SPAM-infested Titanic.
Okay, I kid, I kid...just watch it and see for yourselves!
You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this video
PS. I also wonder how Tarantino feels about getting name-dropped by MIA! What up, street cred!
