It seems wrong to say that any of these lady bands are out to pay tribute to anyone; they rock so hard on their own. But bands like Lez Zeppelin and Vag Halen are doing so much more than covering old faves—they’re out to take on the male dominated world of rock and roll, one metal band at a time. Lez Zeppelin  Founded in 2004 by lead guitarist Steph Paynes, Lez Zeppelin thinks of themselves as a “she-incarnation” rather than a tribute band. Read More
In 2001, American grunge punk band L7 went on an indefinite hiatus. That hiatus is on its way to a close. That’s right, folks, On December 10th L7 took to their Facebook fan page to announce this: ATTENTION! A personal message from the band: Greetings People! We want you to know that the love and support you have shown us here on Facebook this year has taken us all a bit by surprise. What started as a simple band page for us to post some archival photos we had been sifting through for an upcoming L7 documentary has turned into a wellspring of enthusiasm for the band. Read More
GWAR, the horrific metal band infamous for its blood and guts-stained performances, may have just made metal history. It now has a female frontwoman leading the band: Vulvatron!  If you've ever seen the band live you have probably been sprayed with fake blood, and if you're the squeamish type I wouldn't recommend Googling GWAR. But ever since the beloved leader of the band, Dave Brockie (aka Oderus Ungus) died of an accidental heroin overdose earlier this year, the band has been looking for a new leader to take hold. Marnie Stern is mad. "I can't get one f***ing drink," she complains in the documentary I am Marnie Stern. Why can't one of the best metal guitarists have a beer at SXSW? Because she doesn't have a wristband, and nobody recognizes her. I've typed every variation of the phrase, "female guests sit in with 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers," into search engines, but no cigar. This only proves what we all already know: it's not that there aren't women doing stuff in fields traditionally dominated by men, it's just that nobody talks about them. Read More
Former Gossip Girl actress rocks some serious latex for her new music video with The Pretty Reckless. The video feels like a long trailor for Queen of The Damned, but the song is pretty epic. Her scratchy broken-sounding vocals are undeniably captivating and the metal guitar riff introduces the hook perfectly. Despite the somewhat campy lyrics, Taylor Momsen is really consistant with her image and sound. She dresses like a badass rock n roll witch and never apologizes for it. Read More
Here’s proof that you can’t judge based on what you see- French television talent show contestant Rachel Aspe looks like she is shy and reserved, the type of girl who would have a set of angelic pipes. But when she took the stage for “La France A Un Incroyable Talent” (the French version of “America’s Got Talent”), her performance shocked the hell out of the judges and all those watching, and has gained nearly 2 million hits on YouTube. Why? Because Rachel is a metal singer, and she screamed her way through her performance like a total badass. Read More
I can’t believe we haven't written anything on Nightwish yet! Though the frontwoman has changed over the years, this Finnish symphonic metal band has always had a lady singing lead. (Tarja Turunen was the lead singer until 2005, when she was replaced by Swedish singer Anette Olzon.) The sound has changed a bit over the years; Anette’s voice is not as operatic as Tarja’s octave-defying vocals, and the music has grown more and more orchestral with each album. Read More

Happy Hump Day BUSTies! Is the thought of it being the middle of the week getting you down? Are you like me and dreaming about the weekend? Does it feel like the heat-pocalypse where you are too???   Life is hard. I am lazy. Time goes by so slowly in the summer time. At least at the BUST offices we have air conditioning, and an adorable pink Hello Kitty microwave which really helps the mid-week, mid-day slump/slouch fest that's going on right now.    Well here's a little mid-week kitty cat pick me up.
